Invasions should be an option. My wife and I have played this game a lot and with the increased amount and difficulty of invasions she is so frustrated by it she no longer wants to play. She like games that are slow and fun like Stardew Valley. This game is great but honestly forcing me to never kill a boss and not advance or kill the beauty of this game by building a stone prison just to keep my stuff safe is the biggest crime of any game; not fun.

If you don't want to mod, but don't mind server hopping, build your base in one world and do your boss hunting in another. You'll only get the first raid which is just boars and necks. It also gets around the metal transport problem if you mine in another world and come back with a full inventory.
