That's the whole point of the mist. To add the additional danger and suspense.

You'll be able to see it when it starts spewing fire at you, so you need to either prepare for it, or prepare to get away from it. You're also likely close to a rock that you can climb to get out of the mist and see it from above. That's also a good way to avoid it many times.

This game can be incredibly frustrating at times. Especially when you lose a lot of progress.

Just yesterday I got killed by an abomination.
At the other side of the map.
While a second abomination, at the same time, destroyed my portal.
No gear. No portal. 45 min. sailing trip.

Lol.. I had to spend the better part of 3 hours retrieving my stuff from across the world because my dumbass kept pushing on when I realized I didn't have a portal on me. *sigh*

I do this way too often. Like, I KNOW I will die soon. I acknowledge I have no portal nearby. I realize it's dumb to push on. Yet I keep pushing on ;) Lots of running!

You could consider walking/jogging more, make sure not to run too much because you might need the stamina soon. Also, try to listen, Gjalls are most of the time announcing their presence while far away, that dark omnious humming thing kinda means a gjall is nearby. It's not in combat awareness yet but it's a good sign it's time to be prepared.

How to prepare?
Flame resistance potions are great, especially if you like me run with the root chest armor (which also makes handling seekers and ticks easier since I've got piercing resistance).

Shoot the gjalls underbelly, deals more damage.

Don't stand in front of it. Might sound obvious but it's easy to do just like it's easiest to move straight away from it, which means it can keep shooting you. Instead run towards it, if it's too close. This way it won't be able to shoot you since you'll be below it and then behind it.

Have a way to deal with ticks, I like the Atgeir power attack but blocking and dodge rolling if they're on you also works. This is good for when you do end up under it.

But most importantly, goes for all mistlands areas, make sure to have stamina ready, don't end up running too much so you're caught without stamina.
