No one knows yet, and don't count on the 500m thing.

The start point in game has to be adjusted, in additions to all the mistland biomes.

Be prepared to lose a world, be prepared to have a hard few days when it is released, just always be prepared to lose everything simply because it is early access.

Anyone who tells you different and is not a Dev is merely speculating.

While that probably won't happen. You signed up for an EA game. You should expect to restart your world as the game is developed.

Those "major" updates didn't include a new biome, so anything is possible.

I think this will be the (4th?) time they major updated and original(since it went viral era anyway?) worlds still work so far...

its like this.. if you havent explored it yet its fine. but if you explored stuff it saves it to the server/seed and new stuff wont show.

so the little bit of mistlands I've wandered around will remain the same, but the blank areas of the map will be changed?

Almost.

The "fog of war" area is smaller than the spawn trigger zone.

So areas of mistlands away from explored areas will spawn new stuff. An area around where you explored will have spawned its contents already even though it shows covered on the map. It isn't a huge area but just be aware if you are in a smaller mistland zone but only went by it on ship it still may not convert since it spawned its contents.


edit add- this is the way they intend to do things and have been able to manage in the past. I start over with each update anyway personally.
Keep in mind they can not promise to always do it this way. The do it since they can but being in Early Access things may change drastically. You should always be prepared for that.
