Is there a way to craft with it taking stuff from your chest so it doesn't have to be in your inventory?

Valheim Plus will do that and everything else you might want for QOL.

I use the "Craft Build Smelt Cook Fuel Pull From Containers" mod, it does exactly what you describe, it's beyond useful:)

There are mods that do that. Valheim Plus comes to mind.
