Deer seem easy to hunt

I just came back to the game after having last played back in march, and I was surprised to find out that I can just run right up to deer now with a wooden club and kill them with relative ease most of the time.

Anyone know if this is intended? Just feels like a shallow experience now that it is effortless.

I don't see how that has any relevance to the subject.

It isn't like deer being more difficult to catch would put us in a dangerous situation (like enemy mobs being harder), but rather it was a charming experience that added a little extra to the game (at least to my friends and me).

There was an earlier thread that claimed deer were suspiciously wary, and when running would start to zig-zag only if a bow is pointed at them. I remember being able to run up to a startled deer and just club it before H&H.

I hope AI is being mostly ignored while the devs work on the biomes. If they have their critters in clades, they should be able to tune them up at every level when they are polishing the game. According to their version numbers, with four biomes to go they think they are only 20% done, so they are leaving a lot of time for polish.

IRL deer are predictable mostly. They require 2 senses to verify a threat. If the get that, they run away without a lot of consideration.
those are most often smell + one of {see, hear}. For seeing, they sense motion more than recognition. Camo be darned, I don't think the smartest deer in the woods can tell a man from a tree if the man isn't moving and does not stink.

Not a hunter really -- its too much like work -- but taking pics and hanging with hunters, I know this much.

When the game came out, you basically had to get a bow to kill them (it was rare to see one get stuck, usually on a cliff). Now you can spawn in as a fresh character, make a club, and kill them regardless of wind.

They just keep getting stuck on trees, and they do not have the same detection that they once did.

I remember my first game, boy was I proud getting a bow so I could hunt deer. But then my archery skills also sucked so hunting deer was still a challenge.

i liked the trick some streamers use to hunt them: equip a hammer and start running towards the deer. when you're close enough build a cooking rack to block their path and kill them in melee.

The deer AI seems to be wonky. It doesnt react fast enough and allows you to sometime run up to them. Also their pathing is wonky too. They'll get stuck and turn on certain ground, or run in place for a second.

I dont think its that they are too "easy" to hunt, its just they're AI, (Like most other mobs) are awful.

They used to run away they second they became "alerted" (the red exclamation mark) but now they, more often than not, just stand there for at least a couple seconds.
Yea, my small group of friends and I all noticed it right away and were disappointed. Doesn't 'ruin' the game or anything, but still removed that wild feeling.

Do any of you guys actually hunt deer in real life?

Quite often when mildly alerted they will freeze (like a deer in the headlights) since it is their inherent nature to let their natural coloring hide them while they take a second to evaluate the situation. Fauns are even worse as I have almost stepped on them while hiking or hunting cross country. They visually blend in and have no odor to attract natural predators and remaining still is a defense mechanism.

Things may have changed in game since launch, I wouldn't know since I have only played H&H, but they rarely are spooked into action if I approach from their downwind side, even at a full sprint. I love the wind direction indicator in the corner of the mini-map....:steamhappy:

Alright, but they aren't going to stand still and allow you to beat on them with a blunt object until they die.

Issue in game is that wind doesn't matter. Just charge at them and they will get stuck on trees and detect you much later.
