I had some dandelions inside my base that bothered me so I used the pick axe on that spot then back filled it with stone and re-flattened it. They haven't respawned yet, that was about a week ago.

I am pretty sure thistle (unlike dandelion) can be destroyed with a weapon, and it will never grow there again. If there are items in one's inventory they want to get rid of, throw them right in front of the entrance to an instance: like a Burial Chamber; and they will disappear in about a day.
