Sneaking works on trolls and pay attention to the wind direction. If you are upwind of them they will smell you. Same with deer.

You went to their home, that's why you're dead. Mobs that get pulled far from their zones tend to run back after awhile.

Sneaking usually works, just do it quickly. In fact if you go in naked with an empty inventory, you can grab your stuff in one click. Sneak in, grab and run. Eat before you go even if it's just a berry for stamina. You can outrun most things in the game, especially without armor to slow you down. At worst, you would have moved your stuff closer to safety.
