TIL Biome Order

TL;DR: I settled in the plains before even attempting to explore the Swamp.

Wordier version:

So with most survival games I'm used to playing there's usually some type of barrier, what I call hardwall or softwall, that directs the player in whatever direction the game wants them to take. Hardwalls are things like locked doors or physical unscalable walls; impossible to overcome without progressing in the story. The game will not let you pass until it wants you to (without using exploits). Softwalls, would be things like short walls, bodies of water. Like a sound between two islands on Val. Sure the game obviously WANTS you to build a boat to cross, but with enough stam maybe you can just barely make it. Scaling a softwall might grant you access to a harder area, maybe beat a boss out of order, but it's nothing game breaking, usually just a test of skill. I digress.

I grant that maybe i just completely whiffed past whatever softwall or direction would have given me the idea that the game wanted me to do the biomes in some order, but earlier my friend let me in on that little secret after I complained thoroughly about deathsquitos and how they are a poorly designed and implemented enemy.

After being out there long enough though, while only wearing troll armor, I built my base, tamed lox, farmed tar, and learned to dark souls my way with furlings.

Now I've almost ruined the swamp for myself lol. I fear nothing there, headshoting most creatures before they get anywhere near me. Only aboms have a chance, but their pathing is so dumb and broken they usually never even get to swing at me. Now I have a full suit of their root armor and I've lost the will to complain about deathbugs.

Also killed the bonemass 3x this morning. Just cause the bones were taking up storage space.

So maybe I should just leave the plains and go hang in the mistlands lol?

P.S. After reading what I wrote, I guess the swamp key should have been my clue to go pay attention to the swamp. But as I remember, the draugr in the swamp just wrecked my ♥♥♥♥ anyway. So the difference between the creatures there clapping my cheeks and the field goblins doing the same was nill. Weather was better in the plains anyway lol.

There is no 'right' way to progress. There is a suggested way, but it is not the only way. I used Troll armor in the Plains by choice (before Fenris was added) and did fine. I am sure there are people that can make the Plains work in even lesser armors.

You can, in fact, get all the way to the Plains without killing any Boss and do fine (Moder is the first boss that actually prevents progression because of the need for tears).

That is one thing I like about this game (and something that was more common in older games than it is now), you can go wherever you want. You may not survive long, but you can still go there.

These days it is more common for games to do what the OP writes and 'funnel' players along certain paths, while giving the illusion of free roam. But then again I understand why developers do such things to avoid the 'its too hard' faction.

I think he only does it the first time you enter any out of order biome though, so if you entered a swamp early, then a plains he won't warn you about the plains, only the swamp.

Possible. It's a server my friend runs, I'll have to ask him. I don't play anywhere else, even solo. If so then YAY i get to give him a hard time for screwing up my playthrough lol.

Yeah, I'd say the Elder's swamp key is meant to be the hint on where to head next. And then there's the sacrificial stones' descriptions about the Forsaken.

Anyway, good job.

You probably won't get to enjoy mistlands very much until you defeat the plains boss.

Technically, you could start in the last biome of the game as there is a pretty weak softwall of low visibility. What's funny is you have low visibility after progressing normally, so it doesn't matter either way.

Hmm, I'll have to go back and read their descriptors now lol. And thanks. Going way out of my level made combat way more fun, and forced me to get proficient at it. Good thing tho there is a mountain biome about 200m from my plains set up lol.

Even knowing I want to reach a swamp before plains, the simple problem is that I have yet to find one next to a black forest. There's always atleast a thin strip of plains nearby with those damned deathsquitos completely ruining any attempts at getting to the swamp. I end up getting one-shot killed, running back zig-zagging between skeletons and greydwarves while wearing reserve armor to get my stuff back, skills plummet until I can barely hold a bow and my food reserves are exhausted. I really, really hate them and I'm pretty sure I'll quit playing again because of them.

Your closest swamp is always closer than the closest plains, this is just how world gen works. If you're finding plains before swamp, you're traveling too far from center.

Kudos for going directly to plains with troll armor!

I feel you. I raged and didn't play for months because of the deathbugs.

We had to leave our starting Island to find a swamp. If you haven't yet, consider sailing around a bit until you find a collision of biomes you are looking for (Meadows+Swamp or Forest+Swamp).

In our early adventure, we did just that. Saw a bit of forest we thought would be a good base camp to explore the swamp from. However, due to my bad driving, took a turn too wide and we were greated by a draugr that punished our ship till it shattered. The leeches got what was leftover.

Then I went to the plains lol.

I think he only does it when you enter the black forest for the first time and that's it.

Edit or maybe it's ony the 1st time you leave the meadow, in any case I don't remember ever getting it for swamp/mountain/etc. It would be too annoying.
