What the F is wrong with People

Today I saw another one of these "why valheim is dying" videos on youtube. Similar to those "the sad state of Valheim" videos.

people realize not every game is a games as service experience where the devs shower you with updates every week right? for 15 bucks you get hundreds of hours of good fun with valheim. play the game, have fun, and if you feel it gets stale just MOVE ON AND DO SOMETHING ELSE instead of pressuring/insulting a handful of indie developers that gifted us that wonderful game. jesus effing christ.

it seems for many a game MUST have the best available graphics and the game MUST be a totally overhyped AAA title - give them the time to learn that there is more than that.
sadly there will always be an overhyped youngster generation

it just seems weird that the younger generation does not even know the concept of playing a game and moving on afterwards anymore. but what really grinds my gears when I read stuff like "yeah devs got the money and dont care anymore" man this is some really stupid bull**** to say when the exact opposite is true

It's not too strange when you realize that just that sort of thing has been actively opposed by corps for so long in every form of media. A mass of things are put out largely unsupported till one lands just right, then they churn out every iteration of it possible till people are sick to death of even looking at it and the cycle continues. It's why you have AI algorithms doing programming choices at Netflix now, and major game companies putting out 'Medal of Duty' and 'Call of Honor' 37 or whatever at this point.

Trying to come up with something new is too much a risk for the model of infinite capital growth that is SOP for corps, and all that a lot of people have known.

And as far as that 'Devs rich they don't care' attitude, it's a real one for every AAA company, and quite a few smaller ones. It's hard to imagine otherwise, even when it stares you in the face you want to suspect an ulterior motive.

What is wrong with them is that the concept of an early access game is common but not quite normalized. It seems like some kind of accessory contract on top of a usual game purchase, but in reality you are just buying an unfinished - sometimes not even close to finished - game with a nonzero chance of it looking like a finished game at some point before the developers die.

When people say that early access games are dying what they really mean to say is that the genie is out of the bottle with respect to the media's treatment of it and the bulk of sales are already over with and, as much as you may believe otherwise, payment up front is not an efficient method to motivate a human to finish a huge long-term project. It shouldn't be a surprise that the game's roadmap, which originally suggested that the entire game would be finished literally less than two months from the date I'm writing this post (i.e. one year from February 2, 2021), was scrapped once the team hit the motherlode.

tl;dr it's not dying but it's only really as alive as its media coverage

I've been playing computer games since the late 1980s, for the record

I can´t agree with you more, especially after having over 600 hs in Valheim. Cheers

Finally someone with sense who is willing to call the unthankful people out.

I guess this is the most philosophically interesting thing to think about - the thankfulness of the user in this case. It brings into question what the purpose of early access games actually is. Is it meant to be startup cash for a developer's passion project, something that they will effortlessly pursue? Is it just meant to be a means to buy an unfinished game at a discount, with any future work being incidental?

Depending on the goal and its contrapositive, it can be understood who is meant to be thankful for whom and what the objective is in the first place.

Is the developer expected to be thankful for early investment? Then it must be because they want to see the game through or expect most of their revenues to come in at the end.

Is the user expected to be thankful for continued updates? Then it must be because the game was sold unfinished for a profit.

Which one is it for this game?

Perhaps someone remembers a game called "World of warcraft" that "died" after release of the addon "Burning crusade"? Youtube was full of videos explaining why WoW is dead. And here we are, 14 years and 7 more addons later :)
I learned early to give a damn in such videos.

Youtube is the home of clickbait and hate video made purely for profit and conflict.

Frankly I have a hard time believing people watch that crap...

Having posted on this forum since about a week after release, I have a very easy time believing people would watch it

well said.. I would like to add. OMFG it is an early access game. Just like any game it may not be for everyone. U take a chance with any game u buy. Even AAA titles at 60-80 bux.

People.. UTUBE is not news. its scripted videos and aimless opinions. and yes TO MAKE MONEY.

Its the same BS in the Dayz forums. The game is 8-9 years old or so. And people complain updates are not fast enough. Me, I thank our stars we are still getting updates.

Those youtube video people are just trying to get paid, the comments they make don't even matter.

You want to talk about a dead game on arrival, go look at BF2042... lost over 80% of purchases due to refund on Steam alone.
