snowstorm does not even phase my new machine, but I remember them being rough on the 1070.

Strange, snowstorms dont have a negative effect on me. The recent optimization has done nothing but help my game.

Snow storms don't slow things down enough for me to notice, but one of the people I play with has an older system and he really feels it.

Would playing with particle effects settings make a difference?

I play on a decent pc and those storms make it just about unplayable got worse since they 'optimised' game

you can dig out under the giant rocks and it is 'shelter'. drop a fire, 3 walls, and a deer rug and its 8 or so rested bonus for not doing much.
in terms of the cold, make the cloak asap. It should not take too long for that piece.

Regular campfires will suffice. However, when a snow storm hits, it will blow out. So you can just put a 2x2 enclosure with a roof over it if you want.

Fire goes out when there is a snowstorm (aka raining) in mountains.

Just use a freeze resistance me/ad , and you will feel a snow storm like a breeze , until you craft wolf cape or chest
