Is there a way to sleep outside?
I don't know if vikings are scared of bedrolls or something, but I just found myself stuck in a black forest biome at night, so I took some ruins and decided to 'make camp' for the night.
Can't place a bed without a workshop.
Bed needs a roof.
Can't sleep without a fire.
Can't have the fire enclosed or you choke.
Between fussing with the requirements to go to sleep and fighting off enemies while collecting materials to do it, dawn broke and I just moved on. Is there really no way to just set up a simple camp to hunker down for the night short of building a whole log cabin complete with ventilation?

Four posts, roof, fire. Four posts, roof, bed.

In black forest there's usually burial tombs and troll caves, the entrances can be used as shelter. Chuck a workbench somewhere, put a bed in the entrance put a fire somewhere and now you can sleep, min materials 5 stone 20wood if you can find a landmark that gives shelter. Technically min materials 5 stone and 18 wood if you dismantle workbench and don't want to bother dismantling bed

yes and they stay empty only for the mushrooms once completed. In black forest there's usually burial tombs and troll caves, the entrances can be used as shelter. My recipe of the hut
4 wood wall halves.
2 wood walls 45 degrees
3 thatched roof 45 degrees
2 thatched at 26 degrees
campfire plus bed if needed

We could make a Challenge.
WHo build the smalles and cheapest outpost with a usable bed that can be build in every biome (yes except ocean)
That's an interesting idea! Although i usually make an closed shack (2x3x1,5) so mobs dont come attacking me, because if i'm out of their sight, they give up. Although rather big, has enough room for the workbench, bed, some chests, fire and a portal or forge. It aint cheap but aside from forge or portal materials, i can find wood and rocks everywhere to make it.

No, currently you need to make a shelter to sleep. Of course that shelter could be very small, but it would indeed be nice to skip the entire shelter-making part and just sit by the fire and sleep the night away, with an enclosed shelter being ideal for rainy weather or nights on mountains.

The broken stone towers in the Black Forest make excellent temporary shelters. Wack a few skeletons and cut a few trees to put a roof on it. Build a fire ground floor right in front of the doorway so the mobs wont come in. If you dont have time for a roof, sit directly under the stone doorway to the back room, which is a sheltered spot.

Our char doesnt really need to sleep make a campfire press x to sit down in front of it that gives you rested points which is required to restore your health and stamina. Sleep is mainly used for speeding up night time.

i agree that you should just be able to sit by a fire, having to build a mini house every time you want to sleep isn't fun. i guess you can just have a portal ready at your base and the materials to make one anywhere and dismantle it after sleeping.
i dislike the rain, you can't do anything about getting wet. I know it doesn't rain for very long but having your stamina/health regen slower when wet is irritating, especially walking through the water in the swamps.

My opinion, bad Idea to be walking through the swamp waters. I build a pathway with my hoe and the only time I get in water is collecting cores from my core farming spots.

That's good to know, and I'll keep that in mind, but the timeskip was the part I specifically wanted in this case. Good to know that I can still get the other benefits without building a small base, though.

I completely agree, i'm just too lazy to make a pathway in every swamp i want to explore. It also rains a lot there too.

Midas dont know how long you have played there is lots of small houses / huts / abandoned villages we can use in Meadowlands. Safest place.
If it helps
Back last year I took this screenshot of my small camp, sorry its a bit dark but it was just for me so this camp is quick to make consists of 2 wood wall halves at the back on ground with 1 each side.
Then for the sides add a wood wall 45 degrees to each side. Slants the roof.
Add 2 thatched roof 45 degrees to the 2 wood walls halves and 2 thatched at 26 degrees in front of them.
plus one 45 degrees placed against the main roof but over camp fire to stop rain.
Fits a bed if needed for spawn point or sleep and of course the workbench just outside.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2413434862
so I quickly made another now you can see how little materials is needed.

A lean-to with a covered fire. Very inexpensive and easy to build.

10 wood for workbench.
12 wood for walls and roof.
10 for bed. 2 wood 5 stone for fire. Sorted.
If it's raining, 4 more wood for a post and roof piece to cover the fire.
That's 4 trees to chop down and 5 stones to find.
