You can see them as bright yellow flying dots in the air from a distance when you are still outside their perception range. A maximum of 3 can spawn at any one time. VERY easy to pop with any bow.

If they are incoming you can easily pop them before they reach you with any pole arm class weapon and if you time it right you can swing with a one handed weapon and back up a step and you will pop them just before they can strike.

Swap out the cuirass with a lvl 4 root harnesk and they go down to doing less than 12 damage. Properly rested, and with even mountains level food, you can regain your health back faster than they attack.

Root harnesk protects against the wee poker. And ooze bombs are bis to recover gear if ya mess up :D

If they are dealing you that much damage then your armor and health are too low to survive in that area. with full padded, lvl 4 and very good food, they hit me for under 30 which is nothing. They are great target practice. You should be able to knock them out of the sky with no problem. You can punch them bare-handed in two shots. You can greet them with a melee weapon and never get touched.
All that said, if your food is bad or getting low and you have low armor, they can one-shot you if you don't belong in that biome. Consider them the welcoming committee. You have been found wanting. If you think they're fun, wait till you meet up with a 2* fuling. Fun times.

They have 10 HP only, but deal 90 pierce damage.

A common way to deal with them is to block them with a shield and then swing your weapon right away so they don't have a chance to fly off again.

Also, kind of walk forward towards them as you're blocking/swinging. I find it helps me to not miss them after the block.
