Old saved games
Hello,
It's been a while since I've last played the game, updates have happened and I'm wondering if I can still use my old saved game without any issues? Or do I have to start over and create a new seed map?

It's a really good one in my experience. Backup world, install mod, type in a few console commands (upgrade mountain_caves, upgrade tarpits, upgrade onions, start), then you can remove the mod entirely until the next game update.

Actually sounds pretty good! Not that I need it right now... But whenever I do, I will remember it. Thanks, mate!

Your world will not get the new updates in areas you've explored. Even if you've just walked around a mountain and never have been on it, this mountain is considered "explored". Same goes for every other area that you've been so close, that it starts to show on your map, but have never been in it.
As @Mharr indicates: There's a mod for that. Not sure how good it is. Mods always involve a certain risk.

If you weren't too far advanced in the game, I say it is always advisable to start over again. You can still use the same seed, if you liked your old map. This also has the advantage of not having to deal with an immense amount of old terrain modification data, that will slow down your game when you are at these areas.
That said, you should be perfectly able to just load your old character and world and continue from where you left off. You just might not be able to get some the new additions that came with Hearth and Home, as well as the Ice Caves. You should also run at least once the "optterrain" command from the console when in these areas.
It is highly recommended to completely uninstalling the game and manually(!) deleting the game folder (if necessary), then re-installing the game, to avoid crashing issues that some players reported.
Welcome back to Valheim!
Hello!
I appreciate your respond, it's unfortunate that my old saved game won't be having the Hearth and Home and the Ice Caves.
Can you educate me more about this "optterrain" command? What does it do?

Yes, I can play my old saves too. But does your old save has the new updates like the Ice caves and stuff?

There are also various community tools available to help recover older maps by selectively recreating parts of the worldgen or exporting buildings to a fresh save. It'll be fine.

Good question and good answer from @eletricdawn. I had forgotten about the openterrain command. Isn't that more or less built into the game mechanics now?
If you had been running any mods, you have some work ahead of you. They probably need to be updated so they are compatable with subsequent updates. If you were playing vanilla, no problem I can see. Just install the updates and play.
