Any idea if Valheim will run on the steam deck?

I didn't think it was that demanding considering how it looks. My rig runs pretty much perfect right now although I'm only like 20 hours in and no huge bases built. i9 9960x, 2080ti, 64GB RAM. 80-120fps

For normal gameplay it works fine on mine. Being around huge bases will drop the fps below playable but any normal base will be fine.

I'm not sure where you got this thought from but it absolutely is a demanding game.
i7-9700K CPU and 2080 TI and the game barely runs at 35fps in any end game decently sized base unless you drop the settings.

Are you talking desktop or the Steam Deck with this comment?

Asking because I have a rather huge end game base and it runs fine still and I have an older PC than what you listed. Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core, 32G DDR 4RAM, GeForce 1080 11G.

My main save base has 10408 instances and runs at 38 fps on my PC (at 2k resolution) if not doing anything just sitting inside. I can walk around the base on the Steam Deck but it is not really playable at around 10-15 fps. The base does not even have more than one floor so it is not a megabase but still quite large.

But the point was that I didn't expect the game to run that great, but it does actually run quite well on the Steam Deck for normal gameplay.

It's decently demanding on the cpu.

not sure you will find an answer as the steam deck is the bottom of the barrel for gaming

I know this thread is a bit older, but let me post the official test results (since no one did it):

Steam Deck Compatibility [Build: 7377941]
  • This game sometimes shows mouse, keyboard, or non-Steam-Deck controller icons
  • Some in-game text is small and may be difficult to read
  • All functionality is accessible when using the default controller configuration
  • This game's default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck

This test was performed by Valve on 29th Nov. 2021, so once the Steam Deck ships to customers, some things from the list above might be improved/fixed already.

Works fine for me on Linux with a comparably-specced laptop based around a Zen 2 APU. The game could use some optimizations either way.

Not only does Valheim run fine on Linux, but the Steam Deck will be using a Wine fork called Proton in order to translate Windows stuff to run on its Linux based OS as well - they are trying to make it all as compatible as possible.

There's also the fact that it is "theoretically" possible to eventually install Windows on the Deck as well.

I'm expecting pretty much all Unity games to run without a hitch.

Absolutely yes it'll run, the native version for Linux works well, and uses Vulkan on Linux, that combined with the deck's lower resolution (due to smaller screen) and relatively good hardware, you'll find performance will be just fine for most people.

Using it with a higher resolution external screen will be where we find the performance limits.

Yeah.. probably.. but then again it's about being portable, can't be so portable if you have to lug around a 27" 4k monitor on the plane with you lol

Steam deck runs linux, and Valheim runs natively on linux (that's how I play), so I bet it will work better than most games (e.g. windows games which would require the Proton compatibility tool). Dunno for sure though.
