give it a try.
grab a wheelbarrow, fill it with feathers, and see if you can push it up a nice hill.
repeat filling it with lead shot.

the absurdity is in play due to the *selective* enforcement of realism. The cart is realistic. 3 stamina foods and hauling 100000 pounds of metal, taking 'breaks' where you toss it on the ground and pick it up again, repeat until home... or ride the lox while carrying said weight... oops.

Carts really are just a waste of bronze nails/bronze.

Some people used to glitch them against walls and use them for storage or something. I have used them to run stuff around a large portal hub on a nice stone floor.

But yeah .... don't even waste my time making them anymore. I play logistically anyway... those carts really forced that playstyle... I didn't start out that way! Ha ha.

you have to know how to use the cart. If your going uphill you cant load as much as this is a game of physics. Cart also works great for coming down from the mountains and works pretty good on roads that are made. What your loading is also important since a stack of iron isnt the same as a stack of wood. I think they work great.

In any place that the cart would be useful, the time it takes to MAKE it useful makes it not worth it, at all. The only thing that makes carts worth anything is mods, really.

As for "works great coming down the mountain," yeah, sure. Watch it tumble down, break, and scatter it's cargo all over the moutainside. You'll spend more time looking for the cargo boxes than actually getting the stuff to your base or ship. MUCH more time than if you made several trips in almost all cases.

If you spend a zillion hours making perfectly levelled paths, it'll work out for you, but by the time you spend the time in an area enough to do that, you've pretty much been able to strip an area of most of the valuable resources you need from it. I say this as someone who has spent those zillion hours.

Carts are not worth it in vanilla.

[EDIT] Well, I guess they might be okay in SOME swamps. I tend to path stuff out there anyhow.

The only use for carts is to put them on ships to get more storage.

I did the mountain thing like 5 times , and always the cart explode when touch the black forest down there , never in the slopes or in the midle way ... Make sure to be full hp when you throw down the cart

Carts pretty usefull. Just don't try haul it full of ore, fill maybe like 5 or 6 spaces with ore and whatever you can carry on you, still allows you to move about 3 to 5 times more in one run. The weight limit isn't affected when swimming with it so you could plan a swimming route back to your base

If playing multiplayer just have a friend sit in the cart while carrying all the ore and you can pull the cart easy peasy back to base full of tonnes of ore

Yeah, I'm a bit of a hoarder, so I actually benefit from putting all the dozen+ random trophy items, materials, ingredients, etc. in the cart while carrying as much ore as I can on my person. My home base is in the middle of island (where sacrificial stones are), so I have two harbors and a path from each to the lodge... and of course it's on high ground too. 8) But it works. Slowly.

Build them in a way streets in the mountains are built and it is going to work ;-)

I live in the woods irl and I always chuckle at these posts thinking they can get a cart up a forested hill without a path or road.
