Multi Character Play

New to Valheim and found my first single player unable to even defeat the Elder boss so was ready to give up and try something less intense. Pity since I love survival games with the rich biome diversity as developed so well in Valheim. Then I recalled a post - apologies since I can't recall the reference - about multi character play. I had heard about single player and multi player but never single player using multiple characters to cooperate through a survival game. I gave it a try and developed a family of four - 3 brothers and their sister - and started them in a new seed (gJWVCj6rg4). While unable to see each other their shared construction and collection efforts plus the cartography table was intriguing. Wasteful of resources? Absolutely. But their coordination was able to absolve so many of my noob mistakes that I kept going. And not surprisingly as I did so the magic of Valheim that I had read about from experienced players was now happening in my world as well. The family quickly moved past where my single character had stalled and to my total shock their coordinated play was able to survive the current set of Forsaken with not a single death among them. Experienced players can regularly speed play in perma death but this multi character approach almost made that possible for a new player as well. I had read so many posts from new players complaining about how hard Valheim is and in my first character I was right there as well. But single player/multi character is a dimension that the developers have made possible with their game mechanics and if you are a new player perhaps consider this style before giving up. It worked for me. It might for you as well.

Enjoy

Many thanks for the generous comments! I had not a few situations in the Mountains where multiple stone golems would have overwhelmed me. Instead of disappearing into another seed and waiting for Bonemass to become eligible again I could simply rotate in a fresh sibling and have another go. Kudos to the seed generators that place safe houses close to the Forsaken battle sites. The family had Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts and Frost Caves to run into and tag team a fresh sibling to pick up the fight. Yagluth required a little extra to build a terrain hideout but otherwise it was the same process. Fantastic game.

it's one of the best approaches to the game. Not only can your cast be diverse(as it should be, I have 7), but you have the opportunity to rehearse and try things on infinite copies of the same realm, and infinite(nearly) realms to play on. And each of those realms has a hundred exceptional 'great spots', likely of varying uniqueness. Where you can plan, attempt, reconsider, and reassess the (a)situation to approach in an infinite variety of ways.
Another way, what good to Odin is one toon with a bunch of skills and some nice armor, where 100 of them would be much more effective at imposing(Odin's will) with force and resources to any version of the realm at any place or time? And to be able to deploy and assert with capability and lethal efficiently to any task the All-Father desires.
Or one guy, who can get one-shotted, and take with him all the amassed knowledge and skill in one fell swoop?
You were picked for a task, plucked from the river of souls flowing towards the Elysium Fields by Odin himself. Asked to undertake a brave and arduous task. To (re)secure a realm run-amok(prison riot) by demi-gods who seek to flee captivity and cause chaos.
Would you want to return with what you have in your hands and carry on your back(or a cart)?
Or do you want to march in at the head of a well-versed, well-provisioned, highly capable, large group of highly motivated and regulated individuals like a Platoon, Battalion, a Brigade?
Jus sayin'! :smallfire: GL:2019clover: out there!:smallfire::2019shield:

That's great that you found a solid group of people to play with and had a good time slaying Odin's foes! Regarding the "can't see eachother" part, there's a button on the bottom-right of the map that allows you to be seen on the maps of other players. If you all click the button, you can all see eachother and coordinate things a little easier.

Best of luck out there! :cozybethesda:

You miss read what he was saying.
They are all just one person! They just take turns playing the different characters.

OOOOOOOOOOOH... I thought OP meant an "in-game family" of Vikings kind of thing lol. Dang, that's a really interesting way to tackle things! Still, kudos on working things out to the OP! I need my morning coffee, it seems. :espresso:

It is quite understandable. It is quite the unique way to deal with it and you wouldn't normally think of it. People will often bring in a character from another world to help but to make multiple on that world you can use makes it seem more "legit". Brilliant workaround really!

One caveat to mention is that character skill levels in this play style probably are not going to be noteworthy - none of my family had skills over 40.

That is an interesting way to approach things and would make death runs a lot easier to deal with for example. Not something I would do myself at this point but I applaud the "outside of the box" thinking you applied to the problem.
Congrats!
