My boar went missing?

I had tamed a level 2 (1 star) boar and while I was taking a second one it disappeared, there was food close to it so it didn't starve, if that's even a function of the game. But am I not supposed to take the ones with stars? Was my pen too big?

I placed a workbench and about as far as the limit is built the stakewalls (wooden) and threw food close to where it was. It was more or less stuck in a small area running up against the walls for some reason. I now have the pen divided into 4 sections with the taming 4th being all stakewalls and the other two dividers regular one walls, the stakewalls are still the outer circle.

Now I'm taking a normal boar and seeing if this fixes whatever happened but if I loose my second boar I'm gonna be a bit upset, I need this steady food supply, can't farm yet but have carrot seeds and working towards a smelter

PLEASE do not spoil anything about the game, I prefer to learn as I go than look stuff up.

EDIT: Sorry my phone keeps replacing boar with boat, yes I'm concerned about a BOAR going missing. 🤦‍♂️

I had once captured a 2 star wolf in a mountainside taming pit when I was attacked by a fenrig. I was attacked in the evening by a pack of 3 wolves, one of which was a 2 star. I ran toward my taming pit, killing the normal wolves along the way, having not succeeded but tried this before, I died in the process (from taking too much damage from too many wolves), the 2 star wolf was my focus. I was probably only 3-5 metres away from the wolf, which was still slightly agitated and had not yet eaten the food dropped in the pit. Not wanting to lose visual contact with the wolf I waited until the last second until the fenrig came to me and attack. When it was close enough, I took a step or 2 towards it and hit it twice with my porcupine killing it. When I looked back to my taming pit and the 2* wolf but the pit was empty and the wolf was gone, despawned. Moments after that the game music declared a new day had dawned, along with the day number onscreen. Having never had a creature despawn while taming, I must admit how ticked off I was at how quickly and easily the wolf despawned. I literally just lost visual for a few seconds while standing so close to it but the fact that this all happened on the cusp of a new day dawning made sense, in that I did not have visual contact with the wolf, and it had not yet begun to acclimatize at the dawn of a new day.

From what I understand about the night only spawned critters the keys to their not despawning is that they have begun to tame, like you said, by eating (with those cute little hearts floating up) and the player is within a certain distance. I don't think direct visual contact is required and frankly can keep them agitated and not eating. I've always dug a pit to trap the wolf and a little shelter right next to it with a campfire, etc. for the downtime. When I do approach I'll crouch and go to stealth mode to ensure the wolf doesn't know I'm there and get alarmed - thus slowing up the taming time.
I've not tamed any *wolves yet but have had several no-stars that I've trapped at night vanish before I read the fine print.

After making about 3 dozen boar 'pens' I've settled on pits dug into the ground. 100% of ground level pens, regardless of fence type, have ultimately had tamed boars/wolves running around my base. Even with dug out pens it is necessary to make the walls tall enough or they can stack themselves high enough to get out. Wolves do this too. Just watch when an enemy is nearby and you'll likely see them forming pyramids 3-5 layers deep. It looks like an "Americas Got Talent" performance.
Starred critters spawned at night will usually despawn at dawn unless they are actively being tamed with your player in the area. Happy ranching!

At my trader base, I've repurposed several nearby copper pits for this, and it does work much better than walled pens. However, my "America's Got Talent" wolf pyramid can still amazingly get one or two out every now and then, especially during raids. That whole surrounding Black FOrest has my doggos just about everywhere now... At least the Mountain is far enough away that I know they're all mine.

(Wolfpack mod that allows you to whistle for all nearby tames is amazing for this.)

I've lost boars while taming them, a couple of times they were killed by skeletal archers, but their remains were there, so not lost in the same sense as your issue. Once the taming process begins, once the little heart icons begin to emanate from the boar, they will not despawn. Boars are definitely escape artists. Now and then I will find 1 or 2 of my tamed 2 star boars wandering outside their enclosure. The enclosure is an earthen wall several metres high, and is about as escape proof as it gets. I have never found my wolves outside of this wall. I have also found them in my gardens, which are surrounded by double fencing.

also i have noticed thread on support forums leading me to think that just taming an animal with stars doesnt stop them de spawning.. so catch a NO star animal ..tame it... then go hunt a 2 star and bring it back and tame it and breed from it without leaving area..as the 2 star may despawn.. but its bred offspring wont! (that ive noticed ) 50% of piggies will be 2 star so kill the one stars and you will have success

I am quite confused. What does your piggies have anything to do with a missing boat?

Sometimes, boats aren't missing. They're just out wandering, looking for new adventures and checking out what's out there. One day, we all have to let go and just let them figure out life on their own. Perhaps, wisdom may bring them back home one day.

As for your piggies, if you don't want spoilers, then well, namaste? ^_^'

Hehe I think the the title of this was suppose to say my boar went missing :steamhappy:

To the op, I can't really understand you account of events but it sounds like you may have traveled too far away and the pig despawned. It seems starred animals need close attention when taming

Maybe it got destroyed. Look if there're resources where the boat is supposed to be.

Yes boars running around can glitch through stuff or even fall out of the map.

Try to use multiple walls. With a trench around the outside.

Inner walls make sure are at or below ground so they don't get pushed off the map trying to squeeze out.

it really can be a pain, I have kind of given up on taming boars until they are fixed. It can be hit or miss if you just have a bad map spot or insane boars.

The title was meant to say my boar went missing, I typed this on my phone and apparently replaced boar with boat .... But I went far away and back and it was still there, it despawned while I was near it. Nothing was destroyed or missing except for that boat. Now I'm breeding normal board, if I need to be that close to star boars it's not worth my time or effort.

Ugh I hate my phone....

Oh man you gotta double check your spelling lol this is still confusing haha. But yeah man I agree taming boars is a waste of time. Go walk about the forest for 5 mins when you need meat and you'll be good 👍
