FYI blunt weapons work better. A fully upgraded basic club is better than an iron sword here. A few min to get your skill to 30+ would be time well spent.

Use the root armour set it's straight up the best since you'll resist the occasional archers, you have passive poison resistance and it provides decent protection without too much slow down and if you're in the swamp chances are you'll see more than enough abominations to max out the suit which also helps you explore plains as early as the bronze age.

I appreciate the encouraging words kind stranger. This game definitely beats the lesson into you hard when you fail, and I really enjoy it for that.

Bonemass isn't scary he's a giant blob, as a prank someone summoned him on me and I literally just ignored the boss and returned when it was time to take it out. He's background scenery unless you decide to confront him.

Also mountains want you to learn patience the biome punishes those who rush by draining their stamina and finishing them off with fast moving enemies. Stealth allows you to avoid the majority of them since you will see them before they see you.

Bonemass punishes passive behaviour since the biome's poison and ranged attacks encourage you to take out the problem rather than sitting back with a bow or something.

To be honest, you didn't make a dumb mistake. You may have made a beginner's mistake, but certainly not a dumb one.

A dumb mistake is to die, uninstall the game, come over here to whine about how unfair and unbalanced the game is and then remove it from your library to never play it again.

To add to some other posts,

- Set up your portal base in another biome, but close enough to the swamp to venture there easily. You could even consider to have it close to the coast, so you can dock your boat over there too.

- During the fight, you can retreat at the indistructable trees, but don't retreat in any nearby sunken crypt. Bonemass will be waithing there for you, most likely blocking the exit, making it impossible for you to get out or to get back inside.

- Put your weapons (mace, 2H hammer, shield, bow) and potions (health, stamina, anti poison) under a hot key. This gives you faster access to them compared to opening up your inventory, move your mouse pointer to what you need, click at it, close inventory again.
The latter could get you killed for sure if you're too slow.

- Practice dodge-rolling before even going in. Although running away is faster, dodge-rolling could occasionally help you too.

- Make sure you got the Eikthyr power available to be used.
Being a wet place, the Swamp is a pain for your stamina gain. Eikthyr's power will counterbalance that for some time; meaning less use of stamina potions.

- Even if you aren't able to craft the entire root armour set, make sure you got the helmet at least.
That one gives a bonus to poison resistance - not full resistance as some may think - which really helps against one of Bonemass and some of his spawn's attacks.

Yea when I did some post ass kicked research I saw that it is vulnerable to blunt weapons, which I didn't consider since I like using swords mostly. Also I like to have an axe handy in case my sword breaks or I need to quickly collect wood.

Making a lot of assumptions here, saying i looked up guides and someone who feels dumb? It states on the weapon what type of damage it does, it's basic knowledge to use different kinds of damage.

Like I said, I made some dumb mistakes and went into the Bonemass fight overconfidently. But you don't learn without failure and I'm just glad I was able to get my stuff back. Also now the Bonemass has waded into the water off the coast of the Swamp Biome he spawned in so it was kinda funny watching him chase me as I sped away on my longboat.

There IS more than one way to skin a cat.. I killed him quite easily with just a bow.. so.. you can do whatever YOU want. It took FOREVER and I did bring 2 bows with me.. and 250 arrows but you can play the way you want.. even if it isn't the "right" way.. or the best way..
