Valheim Is The Definition Of A "Bad Good" Game
I just uninstalled this crap game.
It has what it needs to be a great game, but the creators made nothing but awful decisions on how this world works. The overall mechanics that define the world makes using the system more of a chore than an accomplishment.
- Have to build a workstation, so to can build a stone crafting station.
- Can't repair a hammer because you didn't put a roof on the workstation.
- Can't destroy anything unless a workstation exists.
- Can't place related workstation objects where you want because line of sight beams block each other.
- Bad inventory system 1.) not enough slots 2.) no slots for clothing 3.) can't craft if all slots are used because crafting stations don't have output slots 4.) game can't organize like items when using "Take All" button wasting multiple slots of same item.
There's too many stupid conditions that shouldn't exist that become annoying and this is a small example. I could easily list 50 more. I would use this game as an example of "How Not to Create a Video Game."

Lol younger one, you forget one generation of RPGs. everyone knows that diablo 2 is the founder of the greatest gear system in gaming and all the biggest mmos has copy pasted it for decades since but everyone also agree that the storage was a problem and people kept multiple accounts to mule between multiple mule chars
I agree that in most hack'n slash games (or kill+loot games), inventory is an issue to manage for item collectors like me, but is mostly the fault of game content and economy designers. When loot is scarce, you have much less issues with the inventory.
Inventory management (and muling) is precisely why I stopped playing at Titan Quest, Sacred, Guild Wars 2...

Spawned copy accounts for some of that. The lack of constant updates, accounts for some too. Stability, permanence; can be inviting.

Sorry, but if you are implementing these things you would destroy Valheim as it is. It is not a hack'n'slash'n'loot game.

Diablo had weapon and armor slots in 97 ffs.
diablo 97 was a loot game, so every 3 second you put something into your bag. These somethings had like 10 different sizes, so making it fit was a large aggravation and you had to frequently run back to sell the junk which cost a portal scroll fee. So yes, it had an armor dummy that held your active gear, and in fact, 2 sets of weapons IIRC. But you had less bag space in practice (actual # of items held in it on the average) -- a LOT less. That is not to mention the very large 'rune' things you stow in your bag for a buff, at the cost of slots...
which I only mention because I don't think that it was better in spite of the armor dummy. Its the total capacity, not the dummy/no dummy, that is at issue here.
which inconvenient storage cap was also addressed and finally upgraded in D3 and D2R
we'll see if we'll blindly walk into the direction of pure inconvenience for 2 more years and call it early access shrugging our shoulders

Yeah but D2 also never was intended to be played the way we do it now. Blizzard back then did not know what they were doing, they just polished their products hard enough that they stood up above everything else and then playerbase was figuring out how to use those games best.everyone knows that diablo 2 is the founder of the greatest gear system in gaming and all the biggest mmos has copy pasted it for decades since but everyone also agree that the storage was a problem and people kept multiple accounts to mule between multiple mule chars which substantially increased the storage cap with alot of inconvenient work between multiple accounts that also cost us money with extra cdkeys...

Diablo2 was fixed with mods (PlugY for example). Valheim is being fixed with mods too. The difference is that majority of players these days want to play D2 modded (or ressurected), while idk about numbers for Val, most likely majority still plays/prefers vanilla.
Speaking of Blizzard, we could get Starcraft into mix, as an example of the opposite, where the QoL that people so wanted kind of destroyed what made the first one good in the first place. And in places where fast paced RTSes are still popular like Asia (Korea) its the 25yo original thats more popular than its "much better" and still updated sequel.
Not saying QoL = bad, but its all not that easy. There is place for Minecraft with Vikings, there is also place for hardcore survival with Vikings. And thank gods *cough* mods we can have both.

this is not an issue in itself, just a QOL thing. In time it can be changed in many many ways i can think off the bat alone. It only takes 2 sec to place a workshop, take 4-5 hits to get wood for one, which is widely available & recyclable.
This game is not about holding your hand or giving you Hints**, except for the ambiguous rune stones.
I would say the workshop is MASSIVE, can we size it down a bit lol?! Looks like it was made for Trolls.

and hopefully theyll follow with diablos gear system, might be the only thing that works with valheim if theyll stick to such a basic combat system since then youll have to at least make up for with an advanced gear system and what more familiar wouldnt the use of gems, and runes be in a viking style game I agree with most of that, the lack of basic inventory features is baffling. epic loot mod is basically adopting diablo 3 features and it works great

Disagree that most of it is polish. In all fairness, most of the problems you're describing are usually relegated to "polish", and there are still at least two more biomes to craft and integrate before the final polish pass.
Its very much as designed. There is hardly anything to add before launch. Ease of use is usually a double edged sword. Thats game desing 101.
Say lets give players "gear slots". So they can put armor in special places just for it. Then ofc since game is designed for given inventory slot number lets remove a column from the inventory to balance things out*. There, all nice and modern. Except now people that wanted to carry more by not equipping some of the armor lost that option. Everything is a tradeoff.
There are exceptions like the "stack all" button thats supposedly coming, but i bet we won't get much more. Not because its EA but because thats how the devs imagine the game.
*- and no, we cant "just give players more inventory slots". They are limited for many reasons, from co-op interactions, incentiving usage other mechanics, putting emphasis on preparation, controlling the excursion/mission time, creating efficiency dillemas that divide playstyles and more.
Most games can be simplified to a big sandbox with bunch of extra rules on top. Its those limitations that make the game what it is. If not everyone would be playing survival games in creative mode. The only question here is how much limitations is too much, and thats very subjective.

i agree, too many side upgrades that doesnt feel integrated with its core feature, rather wouldve seen workstation being upgraded into workstation2-3-4-5-6 and etc or why not adding more features into the hammer itself like at the very least being able to deconstruct a boat for starters and/or being integrated into a crafting skill stree that allows for more spontaous crafting I just uninstalled this crap game.
It has what it needs to be a great game, but the creators made nothing but awful decisions on how this world works. The overall mechanics that define the world makes using the system more of a chore than an accomplishment.

I would use this game as an example of "How Not to Create a Video Game."
valheim really has a lot of potential but somehow doesnt feel like the devs has the vision for it and mistlands really served as a wakeup call for it, hopefully im wrong

This game is in Early Access; that means it's not finished yet. If that's not acceptable to you, then uninstall it and wait until it's completed to start playing. Whine about mechanics and UI then, or learn to give more constructive criticism than "I imagined this game as being more finished than it is."
Alternatively, create your own "Viking-themed survival builder" and show us the game we're missing. Oh, that takes time, skills, and money that you don't have?
Then be patient and wait for the finished product, like the rest of us.
Play what there is of it in the meantime... or don't.

EA is a bit of a two edge sword. Still, would not have wanted to wait for the last two years to play this game.

The game is still EA so its not finished yet and there are suggestions threads that include much of what you are complaining about and may be on the dev's to do list. At least some of what you are unhappy with will be addressed before full release and what isn't will likely have a mod to address.
Check back after full release.
