Serpent Shield
I feel like the serpent shield and larger shields in general are less viable than smaller shields since they don't have the ability to parry. And now with the hearth and home update live those larger Shields are even less useful since blocking takes more stamina then parrying.

They were like this before the new update made stamina management more crucial. I just think every shield should have some amount of parry force. You may be using tower shields ineffectively. To use them properly you must have a high health pool, as the tower shields stamina usage is based on your health. Rather than prioritising stamina foods, you probably need atleast 2 health foods.

I've mainly used the serpent shield since I maxed it out and it worked well enough on any mob I encountered prior to H&H. I just miss being able to parry, and feel like all shields should have some amount of parry force applied to them. I doubt that'll happen though.
proper group combat mechanics dont exist in this game. the only way to handle groups of non negligible enemies like fulings is not to get a big shield but to use a sledgehammer or run. currently the only actual niche that big shields fill is when you play with your friends and they just want a save bait
What do you mean by "proper group combat mechanics"?
I find the Serpent Shield to be useful in the mountains against wolves and would expect it to be much less useful against starred fulings.

Tower shields are more for multiplayer and being a bait , now tower shield have some good shield armor ( power ) and shield force ( push , not parry ) , you have to eat a minimal of 2 hp foods to works great
If u want to parry keep using bucklers and round shields

For me it depends on how many opponents you face. Parrying is typically for 1v1, blocking is a bit more useful against multiple enemies where it may be difficult to time multiple parries.

My first playthrough I solely used bucklers and parried my way through the game
I regreted that decision because I found it too easy. Basically always timing a right click, double left click and win
So on my current playthrough I decided to solely use tower shields. Nerfing myself
