Ramped up Difficulty
So I played this game an TON back when it was released last year and it was by far my game of the year and I saw some youtubers playing it again after the update and it got me hungry to play it again. I've just ran into a few issues involving difficulty. I have just been getting absolutely wrecked left and right. Shields seem to have been given a weird mechanic that seems to make them nearly useless and in general I feel like every enemy has been buffed. I felt when I last played that the game was challenging but not to an extreme but now after about 2 hours back in the game all the will to play again has been nearly sapped from me. Am I missing something? Some new meta or.... Hell I don't know. I just want to play again.

Swamp difficulty is just higher than most other parts of the game. A top tier iron shield with iron armor helps, but that's just to reach parity with the difficulty in the zone. Move slow and stay cautious, it only gets easier from there.

Root armor lvl3, iron banded shield lvl3 and sausages, boar jerky and even honey as stamina food lets me block trolls, abominations and all other swamp denizens.
I just block, Iām too old for rolling around in the mud. š

There are various options for modifying the dodge controls if you don't get on with the default.

Shields aside, lox were buffed to be more aggressive, and there are new deadly blob enemy in the plains and a new deadly monster (that respawns rapidly) in the swamp, and new ice caves that can be a deathtrap to the unwary. The old monsters are mostly about the same, or weaker even (poison seems to be far reduced from what it was, you can all but ignore the shaman in the forest and leeches now, within reason...) but the new content is a small step up in challenge..

Poison is massively reduced because it no longer ignores armor. Simple healing potions are now a perfectly good answer to poison enemies.

Parrying is your friend. You earn more XP towards the block skill than a straight up block plus you get the bonus of the parry damage multiplier.

You may be doing what I did, Ill explain. I started new character and was all I Got This and had to remember Im not as buffed as my other character and I died more than I should have. So I just took my time and leveled up my skills in the Meadows and some in the Black Forrest and Im taking more precautions like wooden fence around me gathering Copper so I dont get caught mining and get jumped by a hoard of Greydwarfs. lol

Of course I ate food lol, this games combat has always centered on food. Even with Minced meat stew/ jerky/ sausages wearing tier 4 full iron armor I still feel like most swamp enemies ko me in just a few hits. Though I have always leaned heavily on a shield and shield parries. And I swear it feels like trolls have gotten a straight up buff.

There has been no buff. You have been too reliant on blocking. Learn to roll. I type this in no way to mock you. Learn to roll. Seriously, learn to time your rolls. Shields are a crutch. You don't need to block anything if you learn to roll through it.

Food!
Did you eat any food at all or just went fighting with the default health?
The default health is only for save spots. As soon as you leave your secure base you need to buff health and stamina with food. But this is not new it has been this way since release you may have just forgotten about it.

Maybe food. More health food gives more stagger resistance when blocking

Yeah, blocking is tied to health, so eat better food. Move around more and try not to get hit if you can. I really only use my shield for archers because I don't want to depend on it too much. If I have it in my hand I'm less likely to try evasion.

Only thing i can think of is food as well.
Food comes in 2 categories - stamina or health. Jerky does have a balance of both though. Choose your 3 foods accordingly depending or your priority of stamina or health. I don't think any enemy has been given any buff that i am aware of.

Enemies in the plains are more difficult, specifically the lox. Food has to be the reason you feel its harder. Wait til you aggro some loxes that spawn in while your fighting Yagluth...and yes, before I get a million guides on Yag's, I did clear them first. The fight takes for ever solo.
