Being 'sheltered' doesn't seem work sometimes?

I'm asking if there's something I'm missing here? I've been playing for months, built multiple large structures from every material available. 99% of the time, its solid and I'm sheltered everywhere. But I'm building a 3 story building, it has a solid roof but still isn't "sheltered" in more than half of the area.

Here I'm sheltered.

One step to the left, and I'm not. But the entire building is solid, nothing changes from left to right. No gaps in the roof, I've built enough to know how to avoid that. Of note, I did try filling in ALL of the windows with wood panels, and it still wasn't perfectly sheltered all around. So is it height?

I'd report this as a bug but I have to ask you fine community contributors to help identify what may be causing a problem. Thanks for reading!

Not a building expert, but if you used floor sections for a roof, you wont be sheltered in that area.

Nah I learned that the hard way early on :P Wish they could be used for that. The pic doesn't show everything but its solid horizontal boards with angled roof tiles stacked all the way to the top, where i built a small chimney that works in any scenario and doesn't seem to affect this particular situation, I'm actually sheltered directly under it.

It does ray cast checks from your character in a half sphere upwards. Vertical poles don't count for checks, and with your ceiling so high too much of the sphere isn't detecting anything within range. At the 1m height mark all the way around add horizontal supports. It looks like you have half walls, but those come in just below the check height, so add bars on top of each of them.

Sorry but not sure what you mean. I always add vertical/horizontal beams around each window opening just to make it more presentable (and its a good way to frame a building before filling it in). But as mentioned, I tried filling in every window space upstairs til it was completely dark and covered, and it still won't shelter everywhere. I also used iron poles around the building to add support, so are those counted as vertical poles?

I really think the height factor is playing a role in this, but I'm sorry I just don't get what you mean, if you could present an example with in-game building that may help.

Example of what I'm talking about. First picture not sheltered, second sheltered, just by adding a beam along the bottom of the window because of the 1m height shelter check:

Using this you can make wide open shelters. Remember a beam/obstacle always needs to be at 1M height. Half wallls do not count. Vertical beams do not count.:

Oh okay, yeah I put vertical/horizontal beams in every window frame, that doesn't seem to help. Is it a regular wood vs core wood issue? You're open shelters seem to have core wood so maybe I need to construct my top tier with that instead?

In your picture at the very bottom I see what looks like half walls without a horizontal beam across the top of them. (same with the bottom of your top half walls.) Without a framing along its exposed top/bottom, half wall=no wall for shelter purposes.

Ahhhhh you sir are a steely-eyed missile man :) I started adding horizontal boards in the half-windows and THEN it counted for shelter. Which blows my mind because I filled the entire place in so it was pitch black and still didn't work...

You'll find the half walls don't exactly count as walls, but beams spaced 1m apart do. Applies to ceilings in some cases as well. Like a hole in the roof with a 1mx1m frame and a bar in the center will block smoke from exiting.

That's exactly the issue. I assumed based on the overall sizing that it should be sheltered, but couldn't account for the minute technicalities like this. I went around and just bordered every half-window and poof, rested. :) Thanks again Weaver!
