Dodgy stone tiles

I'm currently trying to build a stone peer/outpost/fort at the edge of a swamp and I like things to have a certain symmetry. I'm finding that a structure on one side can't be repeated on the opposite side because my block instantly breaks as soon as I place it. I have the exact same amount of support on both sides and yet in one place it works and in the other it breaks. Is there some other rules that I need to know? At first I thought it was because they were over water but i've built wooden peers over water before. I'm just wondering if there are any non-obvious rules to placing stone that I'm breaking here.

embedded into each other, support gets weird. It could be that.
Bottom tile touching ground on one side and not the other, could be that.
anywhere along the way UP from ground, do you have a gap or misaligned block or window/door/etc? that can do it.
In general it all works the same, you get N tiles up from ground, and there is some sort of sharing side to side (so you can sometimes place one more block past what used to break if there are sides left and right that were not there before.
You can also add a little extra there, a little iron down below it may fix it.
