Base Locations

Hi All! I'm still pretty new to the game and was wondering if it's feasible to have bases in different biomes without cheese defense tactics. I remember back at launch, I wanted to build in black forest, but I would constantly get attacked doing anything haha. I only briefly saw plains biome and thought a base would be cool there, but I know the enemies are difficult.
Any suggestions or tips would be super helpful, thanks!

In general, I don't do anything. If I don't want to have to deal with any mobs, I build a double stone castle wall.

In the black forest a stake wall will keep out the pests and generally slow down trolls long enough to deal with them. In swamp and beyond I just build a building with stone walls.

The mobs in the plains are pretty static for the most part, so you will generally not have fuling knocking at your door, but deathsquitos will keep you from farming in your underwear.

Of course, you have to deal with events. If you don't want to take them on / agro them away, you can generally make a safe spot with strong walls / removable stairs, etc, and repair as necessary, but they may tear up parts of your base in the process.

The only cheese defense that is truly the greatest and smelliest of the all the cheeses is building a moat or a terrain stone wall. I build moats around my bases and get completely ignored for the most part. And I use wards to detect any pesky ranged attacks on items in the fortress's perimeter.

Only thing that will be a mess will be a gjall raid and that seems to be everyone's worst nightmare.

I generally avoid complex bases in the swamp, the water level in the swamp making moats impossible and nothing farmable but turnips will grow there. There is little reason to make a swamp base except for fun or style. As it sucks as a biome. Mistlands is unfortunately a similar case. As you can only grow magic shrooms or turnips. At least it has plentiful passive resources like iron scrap or copper scrap to keep you from having to go far for most advanced tier buildables.

campfires also work for this, though much smaller diameter

Campfires prevent spawns in the same size radius as everything else that prevent spawns - 20 meters.

So its the diameter. I tried them out in the Mistlands and they seem to be more trouble then the crafting tables. the tables I get better results with, for whatever reason.

That's why this game desperately needs NPC guards imo. It kind of sucks that you need to resort to cheesing if you want to live anywhere other than Meadows.

You know how you fight Troll raids? Only two spawn at a time, they'll follow you and attack the same parts of wall. Repair, repair, repairs, and once the raid timer is out, start killing them with a bow. EZPZ. Been doing this in single player for ages.

Aside from events, I find that the trick is to avoid line of sight with both player characters and any objects you interact with (i.e. "press E") except for doors - and those should be closed.
It's perfectly safe to build a simple wooden cabin in the swamp, so long as the monsters don't see you.

Events wont happen if you are not there so your bases at other locations are safe. But keep in mind the devs built this game with 4 players in mind so you can try to solo build a base in Mistlands but good luck. You'll literally have to cheese your way into the biome just to get started.

If digging a ditch or using dirt walls is considered cheese, then I personally wouldn't try it. Some people like fighting raids personally, but they will still lose some stuff. Trolls have no problem breaking stake walls. You would be opting for hard mode, which some people do enjoy.

I have been living in my black forest fort for a while now and it's doable, but you do need stone walls because sometimes, a troll comes by :P and if you are not strong enough to fight it and it starts taking down your base, you should probably lure it away to save your base.

But once you're strong enough to fight the trolls, it's pretty doable. Same goes for plains and swamps! Stone walls go a long way in defending. Not sure what you mean by cheese defense tactics though?

Each biome has its own varied survival challenges of course, and thus adapting to those changes is up to you. One of the most common tactics for base protections in any biome is of course the building of earthen high walls and when applicable trenches too. Those wouldn't be cheesing (you didnt clearly define what you meant by cheesing btw).

Also keep in mind as you kill each boss, you'll enact increasingly more challenging event raids that can occur against your bases and thus potentially require you to do even more in order to protect your bases.

All in all, there are a plethora of videos on youtube about building base defenses for different scenarios and different biomes you may wish to check out.

had no issues on my last world in plains, had a small base in the medows then went onto plains for a bigger one without walls.
made it in stone. had no issues, the lox was annoying at first before i got better weapons and armor to kill em easily.

was going to rebuild the base but i decided to just restart instead, going to do the same in this world.

For tips.. if you build near the coast, try to watch for enemy spawn points with the boat,
to see if you can find a place that does not spawn alot of enemies close to where you want to build.
and make sure that if you do build in the plains biome that you do have good armor and keep the food buffs up so the mosquitoes dont kill ya.

the stakewall can help you protect the base aswell. but i assume the mosquitoes just fly over it.

and just take it slow and dont be afraid to run away if you need to.

i bred lox. a LOT of lox roaming free all over the plains like bison back in the days. they got rid of almost every walking enemy. the chop all the trees for me ^^ . they hunt for me in surrounding biomes. they are invasive creatures. cheese? maybe, but kind of realistic one i think.
