I assume to discourage doing much of it and push us more towards building with stone blocks. Terraforming is the thing the engine takes the biggest performance hit from even after the patch.

terrain is also sort of exploity. That is, a terrain-wall around a home is invincible to enemy (other humans can pickaxe it, but not mobs) entirely AND you can sprint UP it to go inside while they cannot. It also raises ground level so you can build higher by tying back to a column you raised. Moats, platforms, and walls from terrain adjustment are exceedingly effective at protecting your home, and bypass a part of the game (enemy attacks on your home) entirely. This is nice, because fixing a smashed large exotic build is painful, but it feels a bit like abuse of the mechanic.

not to mention that terraforming nukes your servers performance

i agree, stone blocks are instances of the same object, terrain modification adds polys...expecially if is extreme.

You can save materials by building one high point first, then edging the rest up a little at a time from the top.
