What level of weapon skills should you have as minimum pr biom?
I’m playing with my son and we keep on getting killed because he over estimate his skills. I’m trying to get him to take it slow. He wants to go into the Plains to get black metal. But his skill is around 10 to 15.

Back to the original... Ive been fine in the plains with 30 weapon skill ish.
Mistlands seems to want a little more from you, so grinding it out to 50 at this point has merits.

Even if he gets black metal, he can't use it. You need to kill the Mountain Biome boss in order to refine black metal into a usable form.

It would be interesting to know where you both are now biome wise. Also are you talking about a specific skill at 10-15 or is that an average across the board?
It may be that you just have a Leroy Jenkins on your hands!

Show your son via screenshots of skills.. how much his skill drops EVERY TIME when he dies dont belive the no skill drain message on the screen.. thats only AFTER you LOST skills and for only a few miniutes should you die again immediately...... its a vicious circle until you work as a team and dont be afraid to run away.. and live.. this game as it currently is (and i like this) will eat the careless..

He is only 9 so there have been a few leeroy Jenkins. We have defeated Bonemass and should be going getting ready for Moder. ( he got a full fenris Armour that he is proud of) but he wants to explore the plains.

Ahh thats a young persons disease :-) Tell him you will be three steps behind and try and keep him alive. But your challenge is to not die as well.. show by example.. It will take time. but fools rush in where angels fear to tread.. so be the Angel and enjoy your time together :-) but ask him to take both the before and after death screenshots he will (?)eventually tire of it..or get really frustrated.. when his skills keep going backward.. Then maybe swap characters if/when he reaches enlightenment :-) Thats what us Dad's have been known to do :-) once in a while Skall !!Show your son via screenshots of skills.. how much his skill drops EVERY TIME when he dies dont belive the no skill drain message on the screen.. thats only AFTER you LOST skills and for only a few miniutes should you die again immediately...... its a vicious circle until you work as a team and dont be afraid to run away.. and live.. this game as it currently is (and i like this) will eat the careless..

Focus on upgrading gear and even replacing it with higher tier stuff, food is also important, you want to have a balance of health and stamina. Try to get him to understand that some areas are impossible to deal with unless you have gear and food to match that biomes difficulty.

Swamp is a test of your eyeballs and whether you noticed them or not.
I can attest to this; I frequently struggle to notice my own eyeballs in the swamp.

Getting killed reduces your skills by 5%, each time unless it is within 10 minutes of a previous death - noted by the No Skill Drain text at the top of the screen.
The minimum skill is player intuition and player skill, character skill means quite little until about 50, 70, 100. Pay attention to your environment, your health, and stamina. Learn your enemies behaviors and weaknesses and use the correct weapon for the enemy. You can look it up on the wiki or you can experiment until you figure it out.
Meadows is tutorial zone.
Dark Forest is a test of your aim and ability to maintain distance from enemies.
Swamp is a test of your eyeballs and whether you noticed them or not.
Mountains is a test of your stamina and aim.
Plains is a test of your armor and parry skills.
Mists is a test of your patience and stamina.
If you're still rocking bronze or less and you can see plains, you should turn around.
Iron/silver armor could be called minimum for plains until you've got your own personal skill up to handle enemies. It's not about character weapon skills, those are almost meaningless until you get high enough in them to make any impact (around 70). It's about what weapons you have and the armor you have and the food you have.
If you're in troll armor and still eating berries and mushrooms, you are going to have a bad time in the plains.
Your son is still at weapon skill 10 because he keeps dying and it sounds like he's still using the wood weapon sets... This isn't a "git 'er done" type of game where you just gogogogogo to the highest tier as quick as possible. If you have the player skill to do it, you can, but if you don't, you're going to have a bad time trying. Slow down, build some stuff, improve your weapons and armor and food. The plains is the first biome where you have to care about those things, other than a temperature tolerant cape for the mountains.
If you've got iron/silver stuff and still suck, you definitely need to slow down and work on your strategies. This game is a grind, it pays, long term, to grind. If you forego the grind, you are going to die ALOT.

Only bow scales really well with levels, beside that they dont matter too much. Much more important are the player levels your son is gaining by dying.
As long as you have biome revelant food, its much more important to know the biome and its dangers than skills or even gear.
