Is smoke decaying my house?
It seems that my large home, which has functioning hearths and numerous light sources is damaging the building itself with the smoke - players do not choke in the home there is enough ventilation but it appears everything is getting damaged.
Or is it something else?
Or is it something else?

no, smoke does not hurt your home, only anything breathing it.
water, from rain or waves, does.
damage from any source, eg mobs shooting it or you spamming your weapons ...
do you have a roof? Flat floor tiles do not count if made of wood. Stone floor tiles do count. otherwise, roof tiles count.

Yeah I have the shingle/scale roof pieces, but what you say makes sense - in order to make the home's ventilation adequate I had to simulate a chimney via opening up a section to allow for the smoke to escape, thus the rain is what must be damaging the home. I suppose the real solution then is using proper chimneys for the hearths. Thanks for the clarification.

Sometimes roof pieces get placed so they don't quite cover the outer wall. The rough end of thatch needs to go over the sides of buildings by about a foot. I often build in the dark and then it rains and I check the walls. Occasionally a couple took rain damage, so had to reposition the thatch pieces. I often just add a 2nd on top of the 1st one when this happens and just move the new down a foot.
The sweet spot for placement can be finnicky in the dark.

Good shout - I should probably add another piece to the base so it overhangs sufficiently as you suggest. Sometimes roof pieces get placed so they don't quite cover the outer wall. i personally love building and placing roof tiles. The tricky part is getting a roof up in time with rain. Looking at damaged inside tiles because it rained while i was building can cause some psychological stress. Then you try to replace the bits with damage and half the building collapses and it rains while you rebuild..... or build in the mountains to avoid rain.

Just FYI with the hammer equipped and right clicking the first option of just the hammer is the repair tool. You don't have to rebuild damaged parts you can repair them to perfect with no cost to materials.Lol, in all honesty because I now know this I feel like beginning again from scratch. The hanging over a foot thing just isn't true. I have never done that and my building doesn't deteriorate. Sometimes roof pieces get placed so they don't quite cover the outer wall. ???? I have never encountered this. If My roof tiles are properly placed in the first place The Rain should not bother then. The only time I'm confused is when the rain doesn't damage exposed wood which has happened in my latest build where two tiles show no signs of decay while all the others do.
you place a roof on wall and it will be fine.

No, you don't need to overhang the roof. Ever in any situation.Tree close by and limb providing cover on those spots?

What I was responding to was the person I quoted saying they had only a couple of tiles on a floor not taking damage. I am suggesting a tree limb may be providing cover on those spots. No, you don't need to overhang the roof. Ever in any situation. Tree close by and limb providing cover on those spots?
But in terms of the overhang thing... I have had to do that but it was due to walls not being aligned perfectly and it was not snapped into the wall properly... it was still over it but the game did not see it as "covered". So there are situations where it is needed. Unless you want to rip out half your base or something. Situations dictate solutions. No need to have a cow over it.

So basically this has nothing to do with the roof, but misaligning your walls. What I was responding to was the person I quoted saying they had only a couple of tiles on a floor not taking damage. I have had occasional problems with rain damage to beams which I thought I had covered with a roof. It appears to me that it involves snapping the roof piece to the interior upper edge of the beam rather than the exterior upper edge.
I say that because it seems to happen when I place roof pieces from inside the building rather than outside. I have no problems snapping roofs to wood walls because walls are thinner. Wood beams are thicker than walls and log beams are thicker yet.
Sometimes I will place the first roof piece from outside the building and the rest from inside. In those cases, I snap the second roof piece to the edge of the first, the third to the edge of the second, and so on until that tier of roof pieces is complete.
