PSA for new players
Hi All, fairly new to the game here but I was dying a lot after beating Eikthyr and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. It came down to one piece of equipment I was using.
The Spear.
Holy crap does this weapon suck for melee. I thought getting a Flint Spear was the progression I needed to move forward, but after dying a dozen times in Burial Chambers to skeletons I realized that this is pretty much to be used as a substitute for the bow.
DON'T USE THE SPEAR AS YOUR MELEE WEAPON. Something I'm sure most of you already know but figured I'd toss this out there.

Appreciate the feedback, all. I just didn’t think about skeles being resistant to piercing damage.It's a classic first edition D&D nerd trope, but it does also make perfect sense.

The spear is the best weapon before you get a bronze weapon like a mace, it just sucks vs skeletons because they take 1/4th damage from it. Luckily they are weak to blunt so an upgraded club deals with them pretty well.

Appreciate the feedback, all. I just didn’t think about skeles being resistant to piercing damage. I’ve never really played any MMO and the only crafting/survival games I’ve played are The Forest, Terreria, and SCUM, so I’m a bit new to some of the mechanics.
I’m just so shocked at how much easier everything got with the club. I was stuggling to hold off more than one foe at a time and now I’m killing three easy. I’m sure the spear has its purpose but in the Black Forest as a newbie the club is the way.

Yep, yep. Learned this the hard way, too. Finaly a flint spear and went out for adventuring. Got blasted in no time.
one handed melee + shield feeld actually way stronger then any other weapon type. I feel like some rebalancing could be needed

What would perhaps require balancing is the amount of stagger a spear generates. Is it normal that you can kill a 1-star Graydwarf or Shaman Graydwarf with barely a scratch (in troll armour)? Just assault them with spear attacks.
What I like with spear is to stagger-parry the enemy, then bounce at it to quickly regain melee range before it recovers, and use the spear (special attack then normal hit). I guess it is possible with other weapons, but spear is really a fast weapon to chain this.

I dunno, I like the spear. I got pretty good with it, too, melee and ranged and have been using it as my opener during a raid or a situation where I know I've got a stand-up fight on my hands that I don't feel like running away from.
Then out comes the knife. Or the club, depending.

As a general rule for fantasy worlds, maybe don't come at skeletons with a flesh piercing weapon.

With a name like Stabby McStabStab you almost have to use a spear.Or the knife. Betting the OP played a WoW rogue with that name.

I use the spear a lot. I kill mountain biome monsters with the spear. Each enemy has their own weakness and I use the spear as my go too starter. Find the enemies attack pattern then try out other weapons. It's really easy to use. Let them attack your shield then stab or move backwards, out of the attack and then forward to stab.

Throwing the spear against Eikthyr is great to chunk him down. It's melee attack can be good against Grey Dwarves as it has a very quick attack rate + hunting deer is also pretty easy.
Stag Hammer is better to use in crypts.

Skeletons are resistant to piercing damage, which played a part in your burial chamber experience. A blunt weapon (club/mace or Stagbreaker) is the best choice.
I think it's fun to fight greydwarves with a melee spear. :D

Skeletons can be dealt with if you parry them with a shield and then go in for attacks or throw the spear at point blank range as you automatically pick it up.
Against multiple skeletons Stag Hammer or Copper Mace.
