I was out in the plains yesterday, draining a tar pit. Neck deep in tar, stamina already gone from digging, I get the message. "You are being hunted." Awesome. Might as well have read, "You are about to die." Was fun getting my corpse from the pack of wolves stuck in the tar with it, too.

All the above. Plus, I activate Bonemass and have a couple of stamina and health potions ready.

If you back yourself up against a large rock or a couple of trees this stops/helps prevent you from being surrounded.

Stagbreaker, Iron Maul or an Atigier will do damage to a whole heap of wolves with one attack. The iron maul is my fave with its 360 degree damage, fairly good radius, decent damage and knockback.

Good food of course and health and stamina potions.

build a 2 block high stone wall around your stone building so they have chew through
that first; double thick walls work too

this will work against everything but blobs (which jump) and of course trolls

^! I keep forgetting about the big hammers but be aware that their area effect
will damage your structure also.

got silver gear and serpent shield but dam they stagger me in 2 sec. Like 1-2 wolfs are easy its the dam invasions with 10+ at once that deletes me :( love the snow region but monsters keep spawning in or close to my base so spend 75% of the time trying to defend my buildings

Dig a moat around your base. Then you can make a bridge and have that one point to defend. Ooooooor, you can make a half bridge extending from your base and simply jump back and forth.

Serpent Shield is for blocking/tanking. You need a shield that allows parrying.

They can also stagger you easily if you don't have high enough health or stamina.

I use the Frostener to slow them down.
But this requires that you have already found Haldor (the trader).

Carry 10 wood and 20 stone and if the event happens drop a bench and then use the hoe to raise ground like 5-10 times directly below your feet. As soon as I find silver I dig a big pit around it and drop the bench down.

The first one got me too.

Wolf raids are actually very easy if you don't panic. Find the closest bigger stone (2 meters high is more than enough) and they cannot reach you. Use stagbreaker or iron sledge to kill them.
