Shelter

I built a nice base which was pretty big and it doesn't count it as shelter at all I cant get my rested bonus or anything inside of it so im quitting the game because I spent 5 hours building a base for it to just not be counted as shelter like a wooden 1x1 in the game would. I really like the game but I can't play it if it doesn't let me have a base

Simple fireplace with good ventilation, and the fire doesn't go out when it rains.

If you build a large base and don't even know the basics of proper ventilating a fire or that a house needs, you know, a roof and that the bed needs to be close to the fire...

Sorry. You shouldn't try an enormous build in the first place. Build something small to learn the ropes. Houses are not just there to look pretty. They have a function as well.

How does any of this comment help the OP? Seriously. Pull your head out of your backside and put the condescension away. OP is clearly new and learning what they can and cannot do.

OP, there are oodles of basic and advanced building tutorials on youtube which show you how to get a useful build down - if you haven't already figured it out by now, have a watch of those, I found them extremely helpful.

Basically for an effective quick shelter, you need four walls, a door, a roof make with actual roofing pieces (not flooring), ventilation for your fireplace and a bed placed within close enough proximity to the fire that you remain in a "resting" state and are able to sleep. Ventilation for your fireplace can simply be a hole in the roof with a 45 degree piece of roofing placed so that there's a hole in the roofline that will allow the smoke out and keep the rain off (spin it around to a different angle). Once you have this and have an idea of how the shelter and smoke mechanics work, you can then add more structure on and look into building defences around your home as you progress through the game.

Good luck!

Electricdawn has never posted anything in bad faith, you're reading a tone that isn't there.

I usually put an diagonal roof over the fire. maybe a wall on the bed side of it just to keep the smoke out. The diagonal roof stops the rain, and two makes it feel like a chimney. I'll do a tall one, then a short one connected to it, just to fit my own imagination that it won't work unless I do it that way. Might be a waste of wood, but trees and branches are everywhere.

Edit: Oh yeah, angle it so it doesn't close the roof. Gotta leave that one spot open so the smoke goes out.

Hi there,

if things start complaining that they are 'too exposed', they usually need more walls around them or closer to them.
If you want to get really technical, you can browse the wiki, starting for example here:

Hope it works out for you!

How nice can it be without a roof or warming fire?

Did you actually use roof pieces instead of floor?

Flat floor pieces don't count as roof. You have to use the thatch. Later on there are other options.

Make sure you have roof for shelter and fire as well. The fire has to be properly ventilated and close enough to your bed in order to sleep.
