World Hopping
I came back to Valheim after discovering the Valheim World Generator (https://valheim-map.world) and using it to navigate the world without getting obliterated by the Plains Coastal Defense Forces on a regular basis. But I'm still struggling with what seem to be unwinnable world seeds, which forces me to hop from one world to another, which feels sorta like cheating.
In my latest roadblock, I'm going to take on Yagluth, but discovered he is on an island with nothing but plains and swamp. I refuse to take my good gear to make landfall for fear that a school of leeches will swim out and sink me before I make landfall. So I go with my nicest troll gear and promptly get killed anyway.
So before I spin up another seed and see if I can find a nice black forest or mistlands beachhead adjacent to Yaggy, is there another way I should be coming at this? Walking into the plains under geared is obvious suicide, but sailing there with my best stuff seems too risky too. Is there a third option I'm missing?

You're supposed to land on the Plains, establish a base, and show the locals that this world belongs to Odin. They should fear you, not the other way around. What game are you playing?
FOR ODIN!!

To add to AugustusKron's comment, you will need to build a pair of portals that connect your new base near Yag with your home base, for the quick repairs, and food stuffs. That way, if you die near Yag, you can go back home easily and grab stuff to help you get your corpse loot easier.
On my world, I have castles everywhere.

If you don't like Yagluths location, you can find others in your world. One might suit your needs/plan.
But yeah, do some serious prep work before taking him on. Maxed armor (padded), maxed weapons (black metal and Frostner). Lots of health, stamina and fire resistance potions, Bonemass ability, set up workbenches nearby to prevent mob spawns and a portal nearby for when you die
I have a base in the Plains but not near any Yagluth alters

Yes, obviously I plan to set up a base and teleporter in the plains once I get established there... and I admit I'm not a very good viking :) I'm mostly a master of kiting, I'm not the sort to burn my boat when I land on shore!
Does using alternate locations to summon a boss work? I assumed that the location the vegvisir provides is the only valid one, but I could certainly use my map to sail to a different one.

Nope, any boss summon altar will do the trick. Not just the one that was provided to you first.

how are the plains and swamp an issue if you are ready to fight yagluth???? docking in the swamp is annoying but the plains are super easy to plop down a workbench and never worry about fulings attacking the boat again.
if you got padded gear and some plains level food (hell, you can roll with swamp food and be ok), the enemies there are a non-issue.

I'm not worried about fuling, I'm worried about deathsquitoes as I sail in. Not sure I can kill them fast enough. And if a bunch of lox decide to spawn right next to me when I'm getting out of my boat that could be massively problematic too.
Point is, if I find a way to get myself killed while wearing my best padded armor before I've had a chance to set up a teleporter to come back and retrieve it, I'm likely to ragequit/uninstall. And I'm very good at finding ways to get myself killed.
I did find another Yagluth spawnpoint with some adjacent forest, so I think I'll try and sail over there and see if that works better.

If you have silver armor and poision resistance potion + best boat, you can land in swamp no problem. Its a good idea to find some already build castles on a coast of swamp and put a portal there.
Then you move to plains, look for a good place to set up, place down workbenches (and wood araund them) and start making a ditch araund your base to prevent furlings from entering your new base.
Or just do this next to plains lol:

I don't understand the picture... looks like someone is standing on the roof of his super-hut on the edge of a cliff?

If you have the right equipment deathsquitos are a joke. One shot to kill them. I'm not worried about fuling, I'm worried about deathsquitoes as I sail in. Not sure I can kill them fast enough. deathsquito spawn in at max groups of three and deal like 70-90 damage, plus they are an uncommon spawn and i've never seen more than 3 in one given area. don't know how killing them fast enough is an issue when there's literally no time pressure, if they go for you just block with shield and kill them in one hit, if they go for the boat either shoot them or rush for the dock, as they can't destroy the boat fast enough since they attack once every like 15 seconds.
loxes are legally blind with how short their aggro range is, their spawning range is like 30x farther than the range that they can actually sense you at.
there's 0 reason why you should fear the plains with padded armor on.

Top of the mountain
Mountain is less anoying biome to build up a base, compared to swamp.
