Not that I have discovered, they can be more or less but never completely safe. Often the best option is to beach in shallow water and break it yourself. A pain but better than trying to get your nails out of deep water.

I just park my boats at shore and place a workbench next to it, which prevents most issues.

I don't remember ever seeing a troll attack an unoccupied boat, but the troll will go after the workbench first in any case, which might provide some benefit. I should not spawn close enough to the boat to agro it anyways if a workbench is there.

The safest place for a boat is inside a chest. Breaking it down is the way to go. Just be careful of attracting other menaces while making all that noise. As soon as you make landfall in a new place, put up a portal.

The least safe place for a boat is the swamp. Try not to land there at all if you can help it.

Leaving an unattended boat has always been an issue, which is why many players have adopted the practice of breaking down their boats (in shallow water) to get all the parts back, and either put the parts into a chest or carry them until ready to deploy the boat again.

It's also good practice to place down a portal anytime the player reaches a far away place, especially after a long sailing voyage, or anywhere that would be a real pain to travel back to, in case of death.

I've had many more chests broken by mobs than boats.

Won't the enemies just destroy the chests? Also how do i get more carry weight than 300, it's bad enough going back and forth farming mats if i gotta carry boat mats also haha

You need to find the trader on your map and buy the belt. It'll up your carry weight to 450 when equipped.

Or maybe i can swim out to the boat more, maybe 40 meter distance but i swear the troll was almost out that far, only saw his head popping out the water lol

Mobs don't normally target chests by themselves. They might go at it if you've left the workbench sitting next to it. If you're worried, put it up on a rock or in a tree.

Usually though I just portal home with the boat in my pocket.

ok thanks, i'll see what i need for portals as i really don't have the time to travel by boat everywhere haha

I don't understand why mobs randomly attack player structures. I mean, usually they don't. Usually, they aggro player stuff only if they aggro the player. If they can't get to you, they attack buildings etc, even stuff the player didn't build.

I have bases all over, and most of the time, none of it gets attacked when I'm not there. Then one day I'm getting back to a meadows base at the edge of the swamp, and there's an abomination leveling the whole place for no reason.

My guess is the devs made a wonderful and adventurous game that makes us the the imagining etc but maybe it's also a bit of a mess?
