Upgrade to iron armor or stick with troll hide?
I beat Bonemass and went to the mountains. Those wolves are no joke. Currently running maxed troll hide, the headlamp circlet, an abyss dagger and iron buckler. Eating carrot soup, turnip stew, and sausages. The wolves are tearing me up and I'm having trouble locating silver so far. Should I go back and make iron armor or is it not worth the time? (Honestly I thought people were just whining about the wolves, like they whined about the swamp, and the black forest which weren't really a problem.)
Also is it just me or do some of the mobs that had their attacks sped up not match the animations. I'm a parry and counterattack kinda guy, but I'm having issues getting the timing right on a few creatures and bosses. It's hard to practice when they can 1 or 2 shot you. It's especially annoying when you have yet to get the resources for the zone you are starting, so your shield is pretty much useless.

Man , you are going to mountain with only 20-like defense , headlamp only gives 2 of defense
I truly ask me how u beat bonemass with that set
And yes , make full iron set , you will have 64like defense

I'll advocate using Troll over Bronze all day, but yeah.. I'm gonna have to agree, go with Iron.
I'm not even at that point in the game yet since my H&H world (I just killed Elder last night and am preparing heavily for the Swamp before entering, including building a new base on the closest Meadows to a decent-sized Swamp biome on my map), and yeah.. I'd say go for Iron as soon as you can make and fully upgrade it.
So I guess, use the Troll stuff until you have all of the materials you need for everything Iron you want, including max upgrades (whether you can fully upgrade them right now or not), then go back up with it.
From what I've seen of the Mountains it looks like it is definitely not friendly for running/jumping around very much, so I'd say the movement speed penalty, if there is one for Iron armor, would be acceptable based on the sheer defense upgrade.

i just skipped from troll armor to silver in my new world and definitely died more than i would have liked, after getting just 1 piece upgraded to silver there was a big difference though and it wasn't so bad after that

I don't know about losing one of the stam foods for health in the mountains. As it is I'm always pretty drained from running up a hill every time I encounter wolves.
Bonemass was a bit of a chore, I had to roll through his physical attacks and whack him with the mace a few times then back off and let stamina rebuild. The few times I tried parrying him he just seemed to break through the shield so I stopped trying.
Looks like I'm spending a lil more time in the swamps, No biggie, I kinda like it there anyway. I'd like it even more though if you could get oil skin gear to keep out the cold n wet debuffs.

I been thinking about this too and just put my troll armor back on. (not up to silver yet) The speed increase is crazy but you lack the armor. I am just at the point where I am gonna venture into the snowy mountains. But the cold really gets me. I thought maybe Troll armor would be warmer. Does not appear to be the case. But maybe I need to test that better.

Nothing to test because dont give any kind of warm , only use anti freeze me/ad until you can craft wolf cloak or chest , but good luck getting a bite from wolves in troll armor there I been thinking about this too and just put my troll armor back on. Currently running maxed troll hide, the headlamp circlet, an abyss dagger and iron buckler. Eating carrot soup, turnip stew, and sausages. -Ooze bombs to poison them
-Serpent shield has yet to fail me, but landing a hit while blocking while walking backwards towards my fort is a bit difficult against 3 wolves, but has succeeded every time. It takes a LOT of patience though
-1 or two wolves can be side stepped then stabbed with a spear and shield. Troll offsets the movement penalty of the shield. Tasty mead + 2:1 stamina over health for food (sea serpent stew is 80 HP)
I use tier 3 full troll and a tier 2 serpent shield with a tier 2 ancient bark spear
I myself have thought about getting full Iron for Wake Up We're Under Attack moments
It's like metal PJ's. JK . . . kinda maybe
Edit: you're food is fine, you're gear is good enough. How far is your fort? Single file (deleted draw. . . what I like to edit after) bridge. 1 at a time boys 1 at a time
Edit #2: the fort just needs* to be (starting from behind you) plank that You jump from to land at the actual fort, door + roof over landing platform and a door(two doors are always better then one jk it's a typo), floor + roof, door + roof, fighting platform + roof + pit with a way out, second fighting platform + roof + pit with a way out. It's more of a Oh ♥♥♥♥ Fort that useS almost no mats and lets you know where you died . . . lol
What I have died to wolves too
needs* = Bare bones, so you can add anything else if you want

the troll armor would be viable is stealth were easy to determine what is effective stealth and not. i know before this update when i tamed wolves i used a set of troll hide to keep hidden more easily. but when i fought wolves, drakes, and the boss i was in full iron. so i guess it all depends on your approach. if your gonna go slow and steady and clear your way out first, troll hide can work while you work for a set of silver armor and weapons, but else, get some iron pieces made and upgraded. only thing i made of bronze is the axe, i dont make the pick until i get iron since antler can be repaired anywhere easily.

1 and 2 star wolves will demolish you in Troll armor. I'd defs skip Bronze armor but Iron is a nice jump in armor rating...

Y'all hating on bronze too much.
But yeah, you should get iron as soon as you can find it. It's such a massive jump, since light armor doesn't get another tier after Trollhide. Yet.

I don't really fort. I just set up a portal beside the mountain for corpse runs and if I ever manage to find silver I move it to where I'm mining and build a small shed around it to let me dry out If the place I portaled from was raining.
Haven't really used the ooze bombs, I'll have to give em a try.
Might be a good Idea to try non-parry shields until I can get good parry shields for the zone. Serpent isn't likely that soon though as they seem to have reduced leviathan? spawns. Or maybe it's just my seed. I've spent all the chiton I've found upgrading my abyssal dagger, so not enough to build a harpoon yet.
Spear might not be a bad idea either, lets you attack before they get too close, but on a mountainside there might be a lot of issues b/c you can't really aim your melee attacks up and down.

Yea I'm pretty sure troll armor really starts being obsolete in the mountains, even if you can upgrade them further now. You might be able to get away with it by replacing one of your stamina food by another health food though. But I've never tried, I've always been in the mountains with iron armor minimum

There a few things you can try first I beat Bonemass and went to the mountains.
