Questions about playing with mods..

I have been running a dedicated server for 4 friends and myself for a week or so. i just added mods to the server and this is my first time using mods for this game in any fashion. through some basic testing i have found that in order to play on a modded server, you yourself have to manually download the mod manager and each mod in a server and put them in you game client files aswell even if you are just playing.

just was wondering if there was an easier way for people who wanted to play on a modded server that dont have as much file browsing capabilities to do so without having to download each mod individually, unzip it, and transfer all the mod files into the game files?

If the people can't figure out how to install mods then they should probably not be using mods in the first place." are bs.

No. This comment is ON the mark. I've seen it too often in this forum where players cried for help because their world crashed, and it was 99% due to mods and users sometimes didn't even KNOW that they still had them.

Some of these users even accosted IronGate to fix their <expletive deleted> game!

Mods can be a good thing. But if you don't know what you are doing and what mods can do, you should not be installing them and then come blaming IronGate for them breaking your game.

I use mods myself, but I will always stand 100% behind what I just wrote.

I wish most games did more with mod support, and though the devs were limited at start these questions are valid since they made bank and have funds to code and improve stuff. Comments like "GunsForBucks has Valheim Apr 21 @ 3:18pm

If the people can't figure out how to install mods then they should probably not be using mods in the first place." are bs. Everyone EVERYONE who paid for the game has a right in my opinion to post ideas, comments, and concerns without White Knight style Snark.

anyone who came here to do anything then give my a solution to a question asked is a damn retarded and needs to get off the internet. it was a question that needed an answer not some opinion gathering session about how you feel about mods.
As far as im concerned only one person gave me a realistic option so thank you to them. Everyone else that came here with an anti modding sentiment, you are dumb go sail off the edge of the earth of he earth you think s flat probably.

modding during development is the best dame time to do it.
EA is about helping develop the game,
finding a balance in combat
adding life to a world
trying new things

hell by the time a game goes gold id hope it have enough content that i feel it didnt need mods, but early access when a game is limited as it is, mods can really help shape the game.

so all of you unhappy people that have no benefit to bring to a conversation, an answer to a question, or just cant talk without sounding like a stuck up ass that thinks the are the ruler of how every should be playing a damn video game,,,, GET BENT AND GET LOST

Well that escalated quickly. You know most of the chat up there is neutral or pro modding, aye?

Do you have any examples of welding the differential? I'm still finding the idea hard to parse - Minecraft is the ur-example of early access blowing up to stupidly popular heights while infested with mods despite the developer's best efforts with code obfuscation.

That modding ecosystem helped boost it to a literal billion dollar buyout value while spinning off dozens of streamer and indie dev careers, a third party support industry and a whole new genre of factory building games. Everybody wins, nobody loses.

It is mechanical device which purpose is to either limit or allow rotation to happen at different speed, so say one wheel may spin more than other and depending how open or locked it is, it affects x-y-z. If you want you could weld it shut with all the consequences that happen, but you sure won't be building one from scratch without some serious expertise and tooling.

That being said, I do not really disagree at all. It is less problem of mods (and modding) themselves but more about the surrounding orbit, mentality and such that can easily get dumb. Which is not really anything too new either in grand scheme of things, merely easier to follow the drama whenever it happens.

Alternative Thought! : "An EA game should not be subjected to EXTERNAL modding. until final release" all that time and energy wasted if the code is locked up tight!.. but i get the "because i can!" attitude.. and im sure there will be hundreds who disagree as is their right.. (dont expect me to reply to any or all of you but i might) but wait till the Valheim baby is born... EA is a testing phase for devs.. to polish THEIR project earn money to advance THEIR project this is a 9 realms of Valhalla idea i believe...so what we have 5 or 7 depending how you look at it... it has a long way to go still in the meantime WYSIWYG ps devs love game !! over 1100 in-game dawns have broken! ps.. this is just my opinion and not intended to change your ideas or actions but perhaps to enlighten you to accept someone elses ideas "the devs" not mine.. there are suggestion pages and fault report pages that are currently active for Valheim..maybe use those .. Skall!!!

Agreed on recommending thunderstore. Your easiest option is https://thunderstore.io/package/ebkr/r2modman which includes the option to generate a short alphanumeric key encoding every installed mod and config setting to easily share identical setups.

There are also a few mods that can operate entirely server side, and others that defer to the server's config if installed there.

I have no idea why some people see the simple existence of mods as an assault / insult to the developers. A large amateur community exploring what's possible in the game's space can only benefit its development. Ask Half-life, Warcraft, Skyrim and Minecraft if modding did them any harm.

It relates more to the dynamics that emerge especially when modding relates to something like Valheim that happens to be still essentially unfinished in terms of content, and it happened to blow up to stupidly popular heights out of nowhere. While the lazy devs™ (read that with extreme dose of sarcasm) did nothing modders did stuff for free and whatnot.

I am not against modding by the way, but especially when it relates realities of developing something from scratch vs welding the differential shut because it already exist it may lead to some utterly dumb nonsense.

As long as you are aware that mods will not only break your game once an update to the game is released and that using mods that add stuff to the game WILL break your world and character when said mod becomes abandonware, you can happily go modding.

Just remember that modding is always done at your own risk and that IronGate is not responsible for your broken worlds.

That said, I can highly recommend ThunderStore. You don't have to register, you can download over 1100 mods from the app itself. It will install, update and individually en-, or disable any mod you want. It will also take care of dependancies for you.

Pretty much the only way you should use mods in Valheim, IMHO. I use it myself and cannot recommend it highly enough.

If the people can't figure out how to install mods then they should probably not be using mods in the first place.

The game is in Early Access and that means with every update your mods will likely get broken and you will need to update the server and each client will need to update their files as well.. If they don't even know how to find the files let alone update them that could cause people to just stop playing and blame the devs for breaking their games.

eh we all get the early access game concept of everything changing and breaking with mods. we love to experience games growth and test new ideas along the way.ca lot of really important game features have started out as mods for games. some people want to take part in playing with mods that might not know much about doing so. most games make it pretty easy theses days even in e.a. of cures the workshop does wonders for a lot of games to make it super easy and make more people want to experience modded gameplay without the hassle, its not wrong for them to want to do so.

While i appreciate you taking the time to comment and express you feelings, it is an invalid statement that served no purpose in proposing an answer to my question.

The devs as far as I know have expressed no desire to support modding in any form during the EA period.

I was just suggesting you rethink your approach to how and who you mod with. But I do understand you not wanting to hear that so I will refrain from posting again.

Have a nice day!:steamhappy:

I'm not sure you can make it much simpler than that. Maybe bundle all your mods into one zip that you give to your friends so they only have to do the download, unzip, copy, paste once.

What limits your friends' "file browsing capabilities" exactly?
