Weapons of choice : frostner until craft porcupine or blackmetal sword , boss are weak to frostner , silver sword or crystal battleaxe

Make new farm base close to biome edge , with a moat and stone walled , end game food needs a lot of barley floor , that you can first raid from fuling villages
You most eat 2 HP foods and 1 stamina food here : wolf skewer , serpent stew and eyescream . after you can farm barley : lox pie , serpent stew and blood pudding

You don't need to clean fuling village from inhabitants. Eat three best foods for stamina, take one stamina bottle and run naked into the village. Steal flax or barley, then run away. Then you have two options: first is to dir from enemies in relatively safe space to recover tombstone; or jump through throwaway portal to main base.

Also it's good to establish plains farm on a small island where is no spawns (or just turn them off with crafting tables)

Become Legolas and Plains becomes easy mode.

Or, master the roll, as if you were playing Witcher 3 or Prince of Persia, since they nerfed the parrying with small shield, rolling has become the next best thing, 0 dmg and brings you to an advantageous position, especially against Berserkers.

This, so much this. One thing though, do not shoot a Fuling on the far side of the camp. Circle around to get him. Otherwise, there's a chance the arrows passage will aggro the entire village. You don't want a couple of Berserkers and some 15+ fulings coming at you. Been there, done that, learned my lesson the hard way.

???
You can still parry with black metal shield 135+ damage
They didnt nerf parry , just how much can block if you have good foods
Rolling its good vs solitary mobs , but against a mob ( various meele fulings and lancers ) dont helps you so much

Be very careful, Plains aren't highly populated but what they have are very strong and deadly.

Bonemass power, fully upgrade wolf armor and weapons to start (until you get enough mats for padded armor and BM weapons). HP and Stamina potions, best food you have (bread, Blood pudding, Wolf skewer...until you can make Lox meat pie).

Draugr Fang Bow and needle arrows (from deathquitos) are almost a must.

Turn your grass graphics to low, you'll see a lot more without them.

Don't be in a hurry (you will probably have trouble with Deathquitos at first. Block and strike fast. Do not tank any 2 star Fulings or Lox. Kiting is your friend, kiting is life.)

Ah, have back up armor/weapons/food/potions and set up a portal before doing anything.

Set up workstations to keep mobs from spawning.

As TangoBlue said, use your bow and arrows.
Dont rush. Go slow and clear mobs from the distance. Single fuling should not be a problem for melee fight, but dont engage group fights early.
Squitos are easy - block and strike.
Loxes are a bit difficult early as they have a big hp pool and deal a lot of dmg. If you want their meat, climb some big rock and shot them. Running around and shooting them with bow and arrows can alert other mobs, so its better to stay at one place.
Also you can bring your wolves if you already tamed them. They are great tanks for fulings, but weak vs squitos and loxes.

Some other general tips for the Plains:
  • Raid fuling camps and towers for barley, flax and totems (needed to summon the Plains boss)
  • Slap down a portal nearby before raiding a fuling camp
  • Thin out the fuling camp with sneak shots using bow -- I personally go for watchtower dudes -> shamans -> berserkers -> fulings
  • Engage fulings group by group -- try to keep each group around 3-4 at max. More than that is still doable but things can get messy quick if you aren't careful.
  • Melee weapons worth crafting from this biome: Porcupine, blackmetal sword and atgeir.
  • Blackmetal atgeir is very strong in the Plains imo. Good for fighting multiple fulings (which will happen very often), can stunlock berserkers (up to 1*) [streamable.com] and loxen to death, can also harvest flax and barley quickly with secondary attack.
  • Arrows wise, I like using frost and wood arrows. Needle arrows are cheap but frost arrows are better against tar growths and the Plains boss himself.

My experience when I started working on the plains was a lot of near death experiences. My advice would be:
A) Find a rock that enemies can't climb up and set up a portal to your main camp.

B) Scout out a border area with a forest or meadow to set up your permanent plains camp, then dig a deep nasty hole for everything to fall into while it is attack your fledgling castle.

C) When building your plains base elevate soil in your catch pit, this way your castle is safe, and always build in stone on the plains. A fenced in and elevated field is your friend. Since plains crops only grow on the plains you have little choice, but a 2 or 3 high stone wall system will often mask your presence from deathsquitos.

D) Create a set of stairs into your catch pit and lead some lox down there for taming. By far some of the best meat farming in the game, but hard to start. Once the lox are in the pit go through your taming process with barley, cloudberries or flax. When you get so many that your food is disappearing right quick its time to get your butcher knife out and put it down to 4 or 5. (Be mindful of deathsquitos though, they kill lox babies.)

Having your deep pit moat really is key in the plains, once your guard lox are tamed there isn't much that can harm your base.

Kind of OP, the plains, because you can tame it ;-) - and this might be easier than some guys might think, since everywhere there are these cloudberries in groups of 10 to 15. Just be careful during night time, when additional mobs spawn(Fulings with torches). The Tar Pit update involves the "growth" blob which is related in friend/foe recognition to the swamp blob (heed that, when fleeing towards the swamp with a "growth" behind you (very bad idea). So you can play diplomat in the plains around tar pits ;-)

Steal flax asap, turn it into Padded armor. This is your priority.
The plains at night currently, for you, is the killing fields and you are on the menu.
