I haven't had much issue with it and i've used all combat styles.

Finally got around to revisiting mistlands yesterday. Its way easier than before and actually manageable unlike before. Glad they made some changes.

It's more in line with the progression or difficulty curve that is present throughout the game since the first balance patch, which also introduced some problems such as the broken AI of seekers and gjall, but that is supposedly fixed in the next update and is already available in public test branch.

You can solo the entire content of mistlands with mele, ranged or magic. Your mileage may vary and some stuff might be harder then others. Certainly not impossible however.

Currently, mistlands is only dangerous for 3 reasons: Fall damage, knowledge about the enemies, and the gjall surprising you at times early on. Every single enemy is pretty easily evadable when you know what you do. Soldier cant fly and has a weak spot, seeker only flies if you are a certain distance away, so you are only at danger if you panic and run away from it. Ticks is all about aoe-ing them to death, and gjall is all about using the mountains and terrain to not get hit ... or just pop a fire resist mead.
First time entering mistlands I was scared to death, while now its actually higher chance of me dying in the plains to lo stamina rather than mistlands to surprises.

I found the mistlands a challenge but doable as a solo player but I only arrived there after the nerf hit. I would say it's a bit less difficult than arriving to the swamp for the first time but I also overprepare a lot. There are some new items which help a lot with the biome so once you get them, mistlands seems pretty manageable, even as a solo player. 2 star enemies in dungeons were a nightmare for me in the beginning, though.

A patch was released shortly after that made everything much easier (too easy, according to some). It might seem more fair to you now.

Another patch is currently in the beta branch that is looking to restore some of the difficulty, though.

Thanks! yes I am challenged by this game quite a bit lol so its good to know they have made it easier for noobs like me

You will always have trouble if you tackle a tougher biome before you're ready, prepare prepare prepare, it's really brutal.

I think most people do this game with mostly melee.
I stubbornly stuck to a stealthy ranged approach for most of the game, till I found magic. There were pros and cons when it came to mistlands.
Most opponents could close distance but telegraphed their attacks. Running far enough back to create an opening for a shot was ineffective but I found that I could sidestep them pretty easily or goad them into taking a swing that would miss. Then I would shoot them in the face while moving backward.
Conserving stamina was key and speed helped to stay one step ahead of multiple opponents.
