Plains Fortress

Finally got to the Plains in a single player game. Took over my first fuling village and want to make it my base to grow plains crops. Will a wooden building survive in the plains or do I need to make a stone fortress instead? haven't really used stone to build anything yet in any of my villages elsewhere.

you can get by with just a moat. If you use stone (my go to) all you need is one stone high. No mobs jump (yet). You can make your home wood if they can’t get over the wall or moat. Moat is a pain, has to be 2 wide and 2 deep IIRC

Skeeters won’t be deterred though. I like to build on the edge of plains to minimize that a bit. Or just have a plains island with a portal.

I always make a small base inside the pregenerated stone ovels. Just use stone walls to fill in the gaps if needed. But you basically start with indestructible walls.

Deathsquitos don't one shot two star wolves, so they wolf will usually end up killing it right after it attacks. Just remember to make your moat a few spaces wide, because the lox's AoE attack where it rears up and slams down can hit your walls if you build them right next to a moat thats only one space wide.

Ehm they really can be one shoted if are unawared : getting a stealth hit by quitos
I have a plains fortress with twelve 2* wolves inside , but with an farm without roofs , sometimes when i just log dont know why my wolves dont get aware of them ( maybe because comes from high and outside the walls , when just spawns )
That ninja bug can insta kill them with a 350 damage hit ( them have 240 health ) if that happen

I kind of used a bit of both stone & wood to make a roundhouse farm in the plains. Has all the beds, furniture & work stations & forge under one roof, as well as 2 portals that bring me directly inside for instant resting buffs. Currently growing 90% of my plantable food here.

island or hilltop plains base is the way to go. island you can avoid spawns altogether. a nice little hilltop and you can terrace it pretty easily. plus makes sniping lox and other mobs pretty safe.

Plains enemies will tear apart wooden structures. If you expect them to attack, you want your buildings made in stone. Terrain cannot be damaged by mobs, so raised terrain walls or a moat are your best bet for keeping land-based enemies out. If you keep wolves or boars at your plains base, keep them sheltered to prevent losses to Deathsquitoes.

A lot of this stops being a concern if you build in a high elevation of plains. You may find some places that count as plains but start to have the white "mountain" coloration on the map. Plains mobs tend not to hang out here. In addition to providing a nice view over the area, such a location remains generally peaceful. The only downside is that this base is not adjacent to water, meaning you would need to separately build a secure port (possibly to export Blackmetal Scrap to a foundry base).

Stone walls. Torches (or other no-spawn objects) on the inside of the wall to give a 20m spawn buffer, keep any 'base structres' ( https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Player_base ) out of line of sight from outside the walls and you'll be left alone except during raids and/or you're making loud noises with Fulings nearby. Aside from the occasional Deathsquito since they have massive roaming ranges.
(note with stone all wall parts have equal hp, so a wall made of smaller blocks takes more materials but is far more durable than one made of large blocks).

I don't know, but if you haven't worked with stone just remember it is much different then wood buildings. Stone has much less horizontal support. You can try to mix in some wood to help. Just remember those wood parts will need a roof to protect them from the rain.

If you utilize a moat, wood would be fine. Otherwise Fulings and Lox would destroy wooden walls fast.

I personally have 2 Plains bases. 1 it's mostly stone. The other is a mix. Both have moats.

Just keep in mind deathsquito's can get over any walls. Mine are 2 of the large stone pieces high and they still come over it.

If you make a pen for wolves or boars, etc, be sure to put a roof over the pen. The skeeters will make a beeline to the pen to kill them.

Lucky you. I have yet to find 2 star wolves to tame. Only ones I've seen are at night and they despawn.

Took forever to get a 2 star wolf. you have to stay very close otherwise they'll despawn. they disappeared on me so many times before i was able to tame one.
