the workbench/forge upgrade addon placements make no sense to me.

so i cant have anything remotely close to the tanning rack, or the forge bellows so that i can save space in my base.

i really don't get why theres such massive no-building zones around these things. it makes planning out my crafting spots a real headache and i just cant figure out the logic and reasoning behind it.

i like things nice and compact because i prefer small bases over massive ones, and right now i'm having a horrible time compacting my crafting areas because of this.

I had to really think about this one, but it might be because if the upgrade ever got destroyed, you would lose all the materials on the ground in a couple days if it wasn't close to your crafting station. Things on the ground won't decay if they're close enough to your crafting station. You wouldn't know about that either because Hugin doesn't tell you.

This is what I came here to say. I always put my add-ons above, in an attic, or below the floor, depending on the house.

Tanning racks end up on the roof most of the time.. or if the house is on stilts/elevated it is under it.

Forge bellows... well I have learned how I want those to look so I plan the placement of the forge to accommodate it.. other parts don't matter to me as they are stand alone style elements... the bellows I want directed at the work spot on the forge.

Well I was just showing how I place the bellows with that shot.
The others are independent and don't need to be that close in a real situation. And could have been placed much closer.
Actually when I am setting up a forge proper I will put the blower on the end of the table pointing in on the left and leave a space in the back along a wall for standing behind it and having boxes behind me on the wall.

The only item logically you might argue should be closer to the forge is the cooler. But even then it does not need to be on top of it either. Or I could just as easily put this against the wall and put stuff outside. The blower seems to be the most picky item, so try playing around with different combinations placing that first. Maybe you will find a combination that works for you.

You can rotate things, move forward and backwards to cheese things into position, and put some things above eye level.

I think its more about semi-realistic space usage though i think a more generous range would be better ie a tanning rack could be outside.. whereas forge related upgrades need to be somewhat close as molten steel, copper etc needs to be hammered quickly and bellows for fires etc also need to be close. but these too could have a slightly bigger radius. ps my workaround is to build a shelf above both and place a few upgrades above . to save floor space :-)

Yeah , what the guys before me said. It's a game, it's a logic puzzle. Use the tools you have at your disposal to create your own destiny. Don't complain about it. The solutions are there, think around the box.

Then come back with a sense of accomplishment and post about how amazing your experience has been.

This is Odin's will.
