My first long sea voyage story.

So my Bonemass spawn was in a distant area of the map, so I gear up, toss portal supplies into my Karve and set sail.

And sail and sail and sail.

Fast forward to my second night of sailing, I'm in a large channel with Swamp to my left and Plains to my right. It's raining hard and the seas are rough, and lo, the very first Serpent rears its fanged maw. Battle ensues, I leave the sail down and take up my bow—I shoot my boat as often as the Serpent and a mere two shots from slaying the beast it slashes at my Karve and destroys it. I promptly drown.

Hell.

So I build another Karve grab a stack of cooked meat and set sail again. I finally get near the site of my death after another lonoooong ass sea voyage but I'm leery of running into the Serpent again so I hug the right shore. The Plains are on the right shore. A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Deathsquito flies out over the water, seas me and promptly one-shots my naked ass off my Karve.

The End.

Well, I managed to build a Longboat and sail my happy ass back and not only did I get all my old stuff back but I managed to kill the Serpent! Its head like, glitched into my Longboat and I shot it to death point blank! Got a bunch of scales/meat and even a trophy! Gonna mount it above my dock.

My Longboat is away at a Swamp for more iron—I want to max upgrade my mace and armor before Bonemass.

Cooked meat is low tier food. Make the cooking pot and at least grow some carrots.

Raft is for shoreline use.

Karve is for transporting exploring around an island, maybe hopping across a channel to get to another island in sight. Avoid sailing at night or in a storm.

Longboat is for ocean trips, transporting to further islands.

I tried growing food. Went back the next day to a empty field.

Well you need to figure out what went wrong or you won't get anywhere in this game without cheating.

Just to toss out some ideas for you...

They may have been attacked... to prevent this put a fence around them and leave a workbench/s to cover the area.

The server you play on may have done a reset just after you logged off and it didn't save your planting. To prevent this find out from the server admin what time the server is set to reset and avoid doing anything like that a half hour before the reset time..Probably best to log out before a server resets as well. You can actually lose stuff that way.

If you play a solo game you might have a mod conflict that broke your planting. I don't mod so I can only suggest you remove any mods and fix your game.
Hope that helps ... good luck and keep trying to figure out how to plant things.

To get the iron, you need to be lucky when randomly digging in swamp, or kill bonemass. Longship needs iron nails.

well when you're ready to give up, do -console, devcommands, debugmode, z (to fly), retrieve gear and land wherever you think is fair and pretend the whole thing never happened.

If you are in a position to kill bonemass then you should already have all the iron you need.

Frankly I just get the iron pickaxe and shield then head to the mountains in my upgraded bronze gear and get silver before I even kill bonemass. That takes some experience in knowing where to look for silver though.

Those aspects are intriguing to me.
Well, I had already landed on a much, much closer Swamp awhile back and had Iron Mace, full Iron Scale armor, Carrot Soup/Turnip Stew/Sausages for food and stacks of poison/healing potions.

Like everything but a Longboat. lol

Guess I'll build a Longboat, put on my old Trollhide armor and bring better food for my SECOND ATTEMPT. Can you have more than one loot grave? Or does the old loot grave disappear if you die a second time (I'm probably going to quit the game if all my gear from the Sea Serpent death has gone poof).

well, if you die a second time the cross bone marker will disappear from your first death and appear where you died the second time. So, put a marker on your map to let you know where your original tombstone is or you'll spend a lot of time looking for the first tombstone (voice of experience here :))

The Longboat will certainly do better if you run into the serpent again!

Yeah, you can have more than one loot grave (mark the grave on your map as soon as you respawn in case you die again).

I like to grab at least 1 item if I do a "naked run" back to a spot where I died, because if I die on the way, I'll get another grave I can loot on my way to my original grave with all the good loot. If I have a bowl of carrot soup or something and die, then I return and loot the grave with the soup, then I'll have the corpse run buff to help me get to my grave with the best gear.

That won't help you with a grave in the water, but perhaps it'll help you later on! Have fun :greenlike:

RIP OP.
Yeah the Karve makes you feel invincible after experiencing the Raft lol

If you are going for long voyages on the Karve, while not recommended, there are some ways to go about it. I still go for more risky voyages in my Karve because im more used to it.

First things first, hug the coastlines of islands and avoid open ocean when and where possible ESPECIALLY at night. However be aware that sailing close to the coast means you will need to keep an eye on 2 major things and they are submerged rocks and Leeches.
The rocks are easily combated by keeping your camera zoomed out as far as possible and look 3/4 top down, way easier to spot them.
The Leeches are where i recommend sailing a bit out into the ocean to avoid the swamp.

I also recommend stopping every few islands in a meadow area and repair your ship and sleep so you lower your risk of running into serpents.
I tend to have a dock on every massive island late game because of this and its super useful.

Tip for fighting serpents: You will see them rear up, roar and shake their head fins. Just as the roar finishes it will charge in a straight line. The trick is to line up your boat so it is facing direcly away from the serpent and just as it finishes roaring, hook your boat left or right.
I've not been hit by a serpent in ages because of this trick..... only my own arrows lol

Good story. I liked the intrigue and suspense, but it wasn't very extraordinary.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm surprised that you were already off to fight Bonemass but hadn't built a Longboat yet. Did you unlock it? You need to craft iron nails and then it will unlock for you.

I understand going naked to pick up your gear--I've done it myself on occasions when it was possible. I only went to dangerous places that way if my partner was watching my grave to give me backup when I arrive. I also always ate the best food I could and waited for my rested buff before taking off to retrieve my gear.

Otherwise I always use my next-best armour, a reliable melee weapon and shield, and my best available bow. Sometimes it's just worth it to make a second visit to the grave to collect any remaining items that were in your inventory.

While your adventure sounds quite thrilling and harrowing indeed, it reads very much like you were woefully ill prepared to face Bonemass.
