Troll Proofing

I want to build a castle that is raid resistant but also looks nice. How tall and how wide do dirt walls need to be to stop the big stick bois?

Dirt walls, not stone? Really you just need to be able to stop their movement across them, so 1 raise wide and 2 tall will do it, but 4 tall is better. In either case you have to use your pick to carefully trim along the outside foot of the walls to make the side as sheer as possible so nothing can walk/run up and onto it. If you have the stone then 2 wide is better because its easier to make it pretty. Note that if at all possible your walls should be north-south and east-west to align with the grain of the world to look tidy. (Its hard to make the sides sheer enough to stop things walking onto them if theyre not aligned with the grain, as-it-were.)

Obviously you need to make them taller if you need to stop them throwing rocks too, but whether or not you need to stop rocks is a matter of individual base design

Seekers and bats may be able to fly over the dirt walls regardless. IMO if you want a nice looking base, it calls for a moat instead of dirt walls, or just regular walls made of stone and reinforced with iron beams or cages. Multiple separated layers of defense can also be effective, but the best way of dealing with events is to lure the enemies away from your base.

Game max is 8 up and 8 down, for max differential height of 16 by terraforming earth 8 up while digging 8 down.

For trolls you need just tall enough to prevent throwing rocks over wall at your house. Assuming base ground next to wall is level ground - e.g. 0 , you need to raise wall ~7. 5-6 will allow troll to still throw rocks over wall and you can easily see their head and shoulders peering over the wall.

Raising earth is lot faster/easier than digging so you could do 7-8 up and be done, or extra insurance and 7-8 up with 1 down, 1 wide moat around the wall

Yeah, i'd say a moat or modify a small offshore island into what you need it to be.

If you're looking to make dirt walls look better, one trick I learned recently is use the hoe or cultivator to put grass, or cultivate, pathen, or stone path it, and it will change the look of the dirt walls. A combo of different tops works in interesting ways too.

Or just look for a tiny island and cover it with workbenches , then build any castle you want with 0 raid problems

I dig the moat down to water, but moat and wall defense is super effective. Wont stop flyers, but a lot less to worry about normally.

To clarify I plan on having a stone wall around the earthen structure for the looks, I will have a moat, and build on an elivated area. The outside stone can be damaged, but I don’t want rhe club clipping through to more important things. This will be adjacent to an inlet I am carving out to be a dock.

Dig a giant cliff around your base, and have your base by the water so you can have your boats ready.

Put the strongest chests with the most inventory slots and put them near your boats. This is the last resort you'll do. Or you could portal away and have your stuff in a different base

My base that doesn't seem to have the ability to experience raids, is right next to the water but the land above my base was a lot higher. I just dug straight down. I don't think Trolls go down cliffs. If they do, they'll sustain a ton of damage

I also fell a lot of trees and leave the logs on the ground to make the pathing difficult for mobs
