Fishing being something you can't do until finding a trader is beyond asinine - it should be one of the first things you can do to start developing especially since you see fish everywhere. Craft a pole or net or something.

I have seen fish get washed up on the shore fairly often during storms / heavy waves.

They swim high in the water, then get trapped on the ground sometimes when the wave dissipates / disperses.

you can forge armor and weapons and all that stuff but a fishing pole is just beyond you

PLEASE consider letting us make a cheap starter fishing pole with less durability at least!!!

fishing nets that have a very limited amount of casts would be great too!!

You can't use anything else to catch fish unfortunately only rod. But yes you can catch fish by hand by chasing them to shore and snatching them when their with in range. So with some ingenuity you can build fish traps or even find locations where the terrain makes fish are easy to catch. But once you have the rod and figure out how to use it then is all good

Weak :( I hope they make harpoons usable to catch fish, and make poles craftable. Bait should also be something you can make, really.

I hate loot gates. The boss progression being mandatory is bad enough, but acceptable. The vendor kind of irks me. That stuff should be fluffy stuff or sake of ease stuff, not something foundational like the ability to properly fish.

Yes all very true, trader is definitely not finished developing and I think fishing will get extra development

I hope so. The ability to sit in a chair by the water, fish with some depth of play, and spill your ale/mead/beer while reeling in the line is a critical element of every good CRPG ever.

I hope it reaches Wurm levels of complexity for fishing <3

The fish you find dead have washed up.
If you find such a location and can figure out a fish spawn close by it is possible to build a fish farm that will leave the fish more likely to wash up and allow you pick them up

I'm thinking maybe fishing will get added as craftable with Mistlands, via giant spider silk for fishing line, but that's just speculation. Clearly the traders items are currently mostly a place to throw extra stuff not fully implemented yet.

The worst is, by the time you normally buy a fishing rod or even finally found the trader, you already have better stuff. And fish wraps are too late in the game and are surpassed by black pudding as soon as you can make them. So yeah, they should really change the entire fishing ordeal, especially considering fishing in this game is perhaps the most boring fishing mechanic i have ever witnessed.

Elaborate? Why DO they wash up anyway... just... get stranded after a storm and die because they're not in water?? They "drown" out of water? Or does something else kill them?

I usually find them along the steep rocky sides of narrow fjords. Occasionally on low lying beaches that get flooded.

I'd appreciate some variety in catchables, and the foods/items they can create.

The dead fish you see on the shore is a combination of water pollution and climate change.

They are slightly bugged and can wash up or even swim up into water too shallow for them. When they are out of water I think they enter “caught mode” like they were fished out and just turn dead
