Should my friends and I buy?

Hello folks! We are Rust and 7D2D vets, looking for new challenges, should we buy this game? While going through -ve reviews, came across lots of people saying that devs abandoned the game after EA, no major updates as if they got the hype cash and then run away. Not going to invest our time into a game with no future. Thanks in advance.

Game not abandonned but dev is really slow as they don't want to expand the team

Unlike large studios that pump(hire lots) then dump(lay off after project released) labor, they're trying to keep the studio's numbers sustainable well into the future. As a dev said the other week, they're not living the life of luxury. https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/0/5456682769569364392/?ctp=3

1. If you had done a more proper due diligence, you'd see devs have not abandoned it and have been progressing with their development. Patch/update notes alone would show you this. Vids by devs and interviews by others of devs, responses on threads here by devs(its only a 10 person team btw) would've told you this too. They've been posting news updates on mistlands pretty regularly on steam and their twitter account too.

There are also players who put out lots of videos regularly playing the game(Jiroc the viking is a good example who has done interviews of devs in the last month or so too).

So no. It isn't abandoned.

2. We had a major update at the start of the fall (hearth n home) and another a couple of months ago (ice caves). Team has specified that major updates take 6-9 months.

3. Given your game listing and implied through that expectations, I can't help but feel you expect a finished game that can hold your attention with tons and tons and tons of content for you and your friends and or heavy pvp.

Its really just not that kind of game. While there are people who play on servers, arguably most do not.

If you ground your expectations perhaps more and watch some lets play videos of the game and it appeals to your group then have at it.

But all in all its a decision you have to make subjectively.

I strongly advise against buying it now in its current state. There isn't nearly as much content as Rust or 7D2D in this game. There's really not much content in this game except for needless arbitrary grinding to gatekeep you from plowing through it in the (maybe) 240 minutes worth of content there actually is. I put 70ish hours in and I'd wager a solid 40-50 of those hours were spent grinding materials to progress to the next boss. 15-20 of those hours were for setting up my base and the ~5 hours leftover was the actual content.

The "abandoned" rumors are wrong but the devs drastically slowed their development progress after they got a huge cash infusion from the hype train last year. Last year there were supposed to be 4 content updates and the devs ended up only pushing out one smaller one because they seemingly took a lot of vacations with their newfound wealth.

They take vacations too like human beings, expect a summer vacation etc... don't panic!

If you are looking for a game to "finish" or rush through the bosses and be done then I would suggest waiting.

If you don't mind a slower development pace and willing to provide feedback for an Early Access title and are willing to accept all the conditions that go along with that then I would suggest you get it.

I don't mind starting new worlds when I complete one and exploring new seed possibilities but some people just want to build one seed... I think if you are just looking to make one world and build it up then you should wait for full release of the game.

Realistically the game will not be done for years but it is definitely a work of love and passion by the small dev team. It will be completed in time.

lol fanboy, this game is abandoned, its had like 2 crap updates its entire existance, at least the modders wernt lazy like the devs are

You are funny.

Really original too!

Edit add-- seriously if people like you took the advice you just quoted there would be fewer of you people here complaining about broken expectations.

Just check the update notes for yourself OP.

Game is not abandoned, its just slow...partially due to the team expanding, but they are working on the game.
Challenge is not too brutal but its a fun game to explore.

there's actually been a great deal of updates, it's just many of them have dealt with the back-end of things. because of that many people who expect constant content updates claim it's dead. the truth is that the devs have been fixing bugs and laying ground work for future content, in addition to putting out new content. now the content added may seem smaller than expected, but there really is more to it than meets the eye. for example... the recent hearth and home update. on the surface, it added a lot of new building pieces. & that necessarily came with a new mob and drops. what many people didn't seem to notice is that in creating the spawn point for that new mob an entirely new fluid mechanic was also introduced... something that i am absolutely certain will play a huge role in coming biomes.

here's the thing though. imho, the game is damn near a masterpiece as it is.

the devs have a vision of both of what they want to make, and how they want to make it. if you can accept that and be patient about content, you'll probably love it.

The game is worth the buy as it stands now, even if there no more updates.

Also you are making a purchase of a product as is. No promises were ever made. Plans can change.

You are not making an "investment" as you put it.

In fact the price of the game may very well go up when it gets to full release. And it is well worth the cost that it is at now.

Do not spend your money thinking you are putting that in some kitty for future development. They have enough money, they don't need your "investment" but are happy to sell you their fine product.

There are a lot of angry trolls who expected it to be done in 3 months after EA. There is zero indication of abandonment; the next zone is being previewed and appears to be on the horizon.

The game is great even being alpha, and it is being worked on... BUT!

It is nothing like the challenges faced in Rust or 7D2D. Game that is most similar is Conan Exiles, which is also very good.

Basically, this is not a PvP game. You can PvP but in no way is it designed for it. I enjoy PvP and the one thing players provide is a challenge, that is varied and fun. No PvE can compare. The PvE in Valheim is like most PvE, at first mildly challenging but once you figure out the timings, abilities, what not... it becomes pretty s8 forward/easy. Valheim is more about the building, exploring IMO, the PvE is solid but at least currently not very tough unless you purposely limit yourself, like you only ever use clubs or what not (or fists/kicks, that would be a challenge).

7D2D can be PvE or PvP, but since you said Rust I assumed you were on PvP servers. Plus it seems designed for PvP, whereas Valheim it is just a toggle but definitely not a design focus. Would be fun to have a 5v5 viking challenge with PvP on and which grp kills Yagluth first wins.... it could be done but then all 10 need to be online same time to be fair, or at least 4 of 5 online from each team.

Sounds to me those reviews you saw OP were by a very disgruntled "Pet" of some triple "A" title thats never done as well as this on the best day of its life

(Yeah looking at you C.E. - But I digress)

As stated above. No not abandoned at all but the initially tiny team were overwhelmed by the success and have determined rather than cutting and running they will do justice to the game by well done additions not cash cow grab DLC's

So yeah its a bit slower than some would like on "updates" but honestly I find it so re-playable that there isn't gonna be an issue for many a year even if things were to stop.

I suggest You go and buy it and try it and after 1 week(ish) if your not sold on it then you can give your buddies direct one to one feedback. I suspect we'll see you around ;)

Oh and also watch out for sailing too close to unexplored areas... Go cautious and you'll be good!

The game as it stands is well worth the price. It's not "abandoned," but likely will not be finished anytime this decade. Despite the slow pace of development, you can still have lots of fun with and without mods. You and your friends could easily get 100+ hours out of the vanilla game.

Like others have said, the game is by no means abandoned, but do be aware that the development is excruciatingly slow, no matter the excuses given for the pace. Do not buy it expecting a finished game.

People have been claiming the devs abandoned the game since the first month of release. In ANY game if you want to see development activity just check the updates on the store page.
