Building right next to Swamp

Shooting at a Draugr here. He is below the aim spot and blends in with tree trunk. 1st shot was high. Getting used to this platform still. He started running in and hit him one out of 2 as he ran.

Not by design ,but I had a workshop joff my front door of this outpost (which has a small moat). Draugr stops and starts hacking on it making an easy target. Just set this up today. first day total: 2 ooze thingamabobs, 2 bloodbags -o ne shotted from tower. 3 entrails, and 1 bone. This is my new hangout. Have some birch/beech trees to clear out behind me.

Skeletons keep spawning not far off shore. I don't plan on going in that water to find them, leeches everywhere. Thinking of a sort of sky walk network to scout 1st. My next engineering project maybe. :D

Haven't spent the night yet. I portaled out. Want to add a smaller tower lower down with stake fence platform to have some protection at night from wraiths. This was part of an abandoned village.

Here is where he ended up. This may be a different sequence cause the sun is out. Weather was wonky this day, between rain, no rain, sun, no sun. Bit it is a 2nd Drauger that did the same thing. I know now cause in 2nd screen I have an active anti-poison potion from fighting blobs.

2m wide platform with stakes into the ground, if you want to go further stick a roof on.

Yes, platform fits in with how I play. I lucked out in that I found a crypt close to the outpost. My initial path is not the most direct route to it, will make a platform that goes there in shortest route. About 70 meters from crypt, within easy eyesight of the flame, is a geyser. The surtels there can't reach me cause of how the water is pooled. So just picked off 3 with a bow. Too easy really, but I'll take it.

I built my main base bordering a swamp. I can snipe Wraiths from my balcony for easy-farm chains (Except when I snipe them with a fire arrow, the chain falls in deep water :( ), occasionally the Drauger & Greydwarves have a fight leaving me a bunch of junk to pick up.
Base borders swamp, black forest & the ocean for those easy metal moving trips.

You don't really need to bow the leeches. It's the safest strategy, of course, but there's better options IMO. Two of those are either repeatedly throwing a spear at them (it's pretty easy to get the spear back on each throw) or get close enough to smack em with the underhand mace attack.

Probably my largest complaint with Valheim is how broken Clubs are against nearly everything in the entire game. In fact, the Bow, Club and Atgeir are basically the only three weapons you ever need. Other weapons are cool and all, like Daggers, Swords and Spears (although there is no high-level spear equal to Blackmetal which kind of makes leveling Spears a waste), but the Bronze/Iron Mace is damn near mandatory for Swamp/Bonemass, for example.

Late-game, I think you have a bit more flexibility in regards to weapon choice. Pretty much anything works in the Mountains or Plains (except for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stone golem) but at that point I feel like I've invested too much time into my current weapons that it would be a waste to stop using them due to the damage hit from being low level at Swords, for instance.
As you say, many times melee is just easier and faster.

So in playthrough from start I don't use the bow much except on deer and the occasional troll. I tend to use blunt and ax much more. By the time I reach entering the Swamps I know from experience that I will want to get my bow skill up for the Moder fight and Plains.

Leeches are great for that. You can stand by the water and they line up for you. Once you start going into crypts you won't use the bow much inside. So in the outside swamp area is really where my bow skill start to climb for the next area drakes and stuff.

Rather than just looking at "ease of killing in the moment", I am planning out my skill progression.

Oh right, yeah. First swamp. If you're lucky you might find a couple of iron while scouting the edges, either from fighting oozers (the big orange slimes) or finding scrap poking up where swamp rises into a higher biome.

You should have been here back when poison 100% bypassed armor :D

Skywalks are fun but not really practical to build or maintain under fire. I've had more success in swamps slapping down slightly raised stone roadways, moving the workbench and cutter along is a bit of a hassle but snapping sections into place from above is quick and easy.

It's a good spot to work up your bow skill.

Also a good place to start getting the swamp upgrades.

That said though I tend not to invest too much time building near a swamp anymore unless I know there is sunken crypts there.

Bow out the leeches and use your hoe to make some paths while you explore. Things will respawn but it typically isn't bad if you clear out any spawners. Paths will also help in running out iron scrap and retreating when needed.

@Mharr Stone would be better, I have to get iron first I guess to get a stone cutter. DEfinately will try that.

@GunsForBucks Hadn't thought of making paths with a hoe, sounds so much easier than a skywalk. Thanks for the tip.

@tes. Your tree house looks amazing and inspires me. Going to try to make one later. So now I will have some hoed paths, stone paths/bridging and a walkway up to a tree house eventually. This should keep me busy for awhile.

I initally built a tree house directly in a swamp area (with 6 crypts).
I had so much fun, so i built a footbridge to a adjacented tree to build more shacks.

The greenish ligthing in swamp combined with fire light sources looks nice.
Only the constant rainy weather is a bit monotonous.

Now that i running around in plains areas, i lost a bit motivation to complete and decorate this base.
