Great game, but too frustrating at times. Challenging is fun. Just plain hard in not.

I am in Bronze armour, just starting the swamp. The smell of the swamp happened at my main base. I died. Despite my corpse and gear being 50 meters from my spawn point, having to be naked against draugrs and skeletons means I am dying in one hit over and over, inches from my corpse.

Meanwhile, I can do nothing to stop on onslaught against the base I have so meticulously set up. I probably died a dozen times, never once reaching my gear. The raid stopped, the enemies remained, still destroying everything I just set up literally minutes before. Hours of work, under attack, and I can't stop it because of the poorly thought-through, poorly balanced gimmicks. I rage quit. I won't play again for a long time.

Every few months, I will play this game and have a great time, then I hit this exact wall, every time, and uninstall out of rage. Being naked and getting one hit by enemies that attack by the dozen, right outside your spawn point, is not good game design. It is an exercise in rage control. Challenging is fun. Just plain hard is not.

I am not wanting to play a super punishing, mega hard game. I want a chilll but challenging survival/crafting experience, mostly just to make cool bases and Valheim has the best building mechanics going.

I just wish there was a way to stop those stupid enemy raids. Give me an option to disable them. Make that option turn off achievements, if it's not your intention to make a chill game. The game would be way more fun for a lot more people.

Gather lots of stone, raise terrain walls around your base. Raid-proof base.

  • You could use mods to disable raids.
  • You could use console commands, to: god mode, stop events, kill all enemies.
  • Since you've seen this now, you could prepare for it. It should only be brutal once or twice, it's not intended that it will always be this hard to deal with.

People would be willing to help you figure it out and do better.

Dig a deep trench around your base, and make sure the whole area has workbench coverage. They can't get in then. Consider making outposts up a tree or on something tall.

Also if you manage to run and dodge for two minutes inside the red circle, the clock will run down and the raid will end.

I'm not seeing that. First off, use better barriers. They don't even make it to my base as I just dug a big moat around it.

Second, at least eat some food before you go. If you do that, it shouldn't be so hard to dodge the hoards, or maybe I'm just not as far as you to see bigger hoards... I've had smell of the swamp raids though, and I'm currently exploring the swamp.

Lastly, you should have multiple sets of gear. I just use my previous set for my corps runs. When I was rolling all troll gear, I did make two full sets of it because I had a ton of their skins. It's what I still use for corpse runs.

Wooden pole fence around the base helps a lot and should be number one priority. At least in my games enemies haven't been very interested in destroying the fence and they'll chase other biome npc's instead.

Stop yolo'ing into them. Eat some food, get rested, get your HP back up, wait for the event to be over. If they're all camping your body just kite them away (put your leather set back on if you need to) and then grab it. You get Corpse Run buff after you grab your corpse which reduces all damage by 75%

has basically just begun the journey to current endgame. complains already. game isnt for you clearly.

if your base was destroyed by that your base sorry to say it that bluntly : was simply not a GOOD BASE to begin with.

you can go to the swamp long before this event even occurs as you must kill elder for it to even happen. and going to the swamp at night can unlock stone cutter and with it stonewalls by just killing a few ozzers in the night. you only need 2 scrap iron for it.

plus you can bait the monsters to chase after you until the timer of the raid event expires. most are melee enemies.

you dont want a brutal survival experience. yet game is discribed to be precisely that. you want a chill easy experience. well too bad. then this game simply IS NOT MEANT FOR YOU to BEGIN WITH. you bought a game which clearly doesnt fit what you want. asking for it to become what you want. thats just selfish and would ruin this game for alot of others in exchange. thus wont happen.

there is plenty of easy chilling survival games out there for you. valheim isnt one of them by default. if you truely wanna change it there is mods aswell. but dont ask for the vanilla game to change to cater to YOUR needs. thats just stupid by default.

This confuses me, dragur and skeletons can both be archers.

Difficulty settings are supposed to be coming. I see no reason why "I just want to build stuff" shouldn't be an option, when there's options then having that takes nothing away from players looking for the default "brutal" experience. There's also players interested in a much harder experience, are they in the wrong game because of middle-of-the-road default balance?

I agree. We desperately need difficulty settings. It is fine that the "brutal experience" is the default, but a lot of players don't enjoy it. I, want a more chill experience. I know there are cheat codes and god mode and whatnot, but that is not what we are asking for. Just the possibility to tune the experience and challenge to suit our needs and enjoyment. And difficulty settings would be good for those pros who wants an even more brutal challenge too!

I'd say they are, if they think early access game is immediately going to cater to needs outside of its core gameplay and major advertised features. It's pretty important to get the big parts properly implemented first and then move on to fun side content and additional options.

immediately
It has been two years. Difficulty settings have also been announced as upcoming.

And, mods exist although not officially, along with commands like /nomap, and personal challenges like no portal.

If someone just wants to build stuff, they should build their giant forts on a different map from where they kill the bosses. No raids other than necks and boars then.

Otherwise, the trench works so well that some people consider it a cheat. No worries until the flyers, and they're more dangerous to your livestock than to you.

I agree with difficulty settings too, but outside of mods, we're not there yet.

Right, we're not there yet. But it's coming, people want it, this topic adds to that discussion... my point is OPs desire for the games direction doesn't take away from anyone elses and is in line with the current development direction. This isn't a zero sum that people need to defend the base game from.
