why does a furnace need magical essence
when there is nothing magical about it?
no eternal flame inside it, guess the only magical thing it does is to
"spit it out in a block"
but thats not very impressive, so.. why the special ingredient?

Same reason a sword need a Bronze bar, part of the game like all games, why do I need to upgrade my forge to make a better sword?
I only wish once you make the Blast Furnace you didn't have to use the old ones

That is the way things work now. It would be nice if there was a basic furnace that could be made with just stone and coal and would only be useful for making bronze. That way a Blast furnace made with Surtling cores would be an upgrade, maybe even make it use a little less coal per ingot due to more efficient flames or something. Heck maybe there could be a basic furnace which only does 'basic' ingots, copper, black iron, silver. And the Surtling furnace can do alloys and basic ingots so bronze, Damascus iron, Electrum silver or whatever.
Edit. Also if they do add a basic furnace and make the Surtling furnace capable of making more powerful stuff then they would have to make Surtling cores rarer, maybe larger more dangerous dungeons? Make Surtlings rarer and more dangerous themselves, maybe even needing special means to kill rather than the normal whack em with a stick strat?
Cores being used and available as you open up mining are no obstacle to making a furnace.
The first furnace does copper, tin, iron, silver
The blast furnace in game already is needed for blackmetal

Why change what is already there? The current smelter is unlocked at the appropriate time, in the progression, WHEN the player is able to actually mine the ores and WHEN the player needs to start thinking about upgrading weapons and tools etc, past sticks and stones.
That wasn't just a "willy nilly" decision to do it that way, to add filler, or to inflate the grind... It's that way to unlock progression at the right time and not before, plus it fits nicely having "magical fire element" being needed for something that is going to smelt metals.
Using your example of "a basic furnace that could be made with just stone and coal and would only be useful for making bronze."... Means you are suggesting that they make a furnace which is basically useless after only 1 biome, and, using the mechanics in the game as a pattern, would mean that the recipe for such a furnace gets unlocked by either picking up a stone or a piece of coal ( any burnt piece of food ), which could easily happen the very first day.
Does not make sense to have a furnace unlock that early in the game, especially when the player can't even mine anything during the first biome progression, and would only end up being a distraction and confuse people...
The way it is,the smelter is used for a little over 1/2 the game, up until the player needs to smelt black iron... Enter the blast furnace which takes over for the second half of the game, as Im sure they will add many more resources as new biomes are added.
Adding more furnaces and changing the surtlings and their cores just doesn't seem like something that's needed.... It's simple and beautiful just how it is, IMHO.

There IS an eternal flame inside it. What do you think lights the coal you stick in there? Same for the wood you put in the kiln. My seed didn't come with any Zippo lighters.

nah just the regular furnace, is it not just stones slapped together, and then you have a furnace? dont see the need for those cubes other than a time blocker for people to get things?
I'm not going to attempt to get inside the minds of these awesome Devs, but I think the "idea" is that... while you are out there trudging along in the Dark Forest gathering ores, you might as well pop into a dungeon or two and grab some Cores. In all their uses (so far for me) they seem to bring the "fire" element to whatever they're being used for. So in that respect, it makes sense to me they would be needed for the Smelter, the Kiln, and the Blast Furnace (and other things as well).

yea true.. i guess..
i know its not minecraft, or any other normal survival game.
but i do like how simple things are, but the hard part is getting the minerals.
now if there was an option to build an enhanced furnace with those cubes with an eternal flame, bring it on!

You're absolutely right, "this isn't Minecraft" and there is no "easy button" here. I actually like the fact that there's a degree of time management as well... unless you play with partners that can being doing one thing whilst you do another. You have to watch your food cook so it doesn't burn, you can only make 10 ingots at a time (unless you build more Kilns), etc. You have to actually **do** stuff. There's no stacking 500 chests and laying down a line of redstone to a hopper and furnace to let the game do everything for you.
These are Vikings... not factory workers in the Industrial age. ;)

So anything magic has to be super duper spectacular (instead of just very practical as in this case) otherwise the materials involved are not justified?
Man how dull.

If you already think that this is "grind", wait till you get to iron and all the stuff that can be made of it...

I saw on a Jiroc video that Grimcore (Dev) said there are several types of magic in Valheim, and each thing you see draws magic from a different source. The fuling mage draws magic in a different way than draugr being undead.

There is "something magical" about almost every aspect of this game... animated wooden creatures, deer Boss that shoots lightning,... actually when it comes down to it ... each and every biome is filled with magically embued creatures.
Even the player is magically re-animated, because if we are paying attention, we died in battle and now been brought to this strange plane of existence.
Surtlings are fire elementals, so what's wrong with needing their fire essence or "cores" in order to make our furnaces, kilns etc.?
This game isn't for everyone, especially those who want a simple / casual type of game... It's not a game for the "lazy" players who just want to cruise around and easily defeat everything without investing the time into gathering the resources, and upgrading their equipment / food / skills.
Pretty sure the devs aren't going to "dumb it down", so best bet is either play it as-is or find a different game... *shrug*

I use a coal stove for heat and it would be pretty magical if the ashes cleaned themselves out IMHO.

Do you mean the Blast Furnace? The one that needs Surtling Cores? Because it needs to be MUCH hotter than the Kiln to make Black Metal ingots. They aren't "magical".. they just glow because, I presume, they are like a hot coal.
