Enemy Volume

I've started a new map and character to play recently with my kids since they've grown interested in the game and I've come to notice that enemy spawning seems to be substantially higher than it was before H&H.

I've also noticed more Invasions/Assaults occuring and the amount of enemies in those higher as well as well as the increase of Stars on some of them.

Whether I'm playing on the map solo or they're with me, the attacks seem to happen with the same intensities as well. We downed our first boss, went back home and before we could even get to the house proper, the first invasion struck and we got slammed by a 2 Star Brute and a team of 10ish Grey's (mixed between Greyling's and their buffer Dwarven Cousins).

I feel like I'm missing something, cause no matter what we do, we're constantly being charged at by several mobs at a time, making even the most basic task a chore. We don't even bother trying to do anything at Night at this point cause of the high frequency spawning.

Is anyone else noticing a dramatic increase in enemy spawns like we are or is this maybe just some crap rng we've ran into since killing our first boss?

( We're not playing with any changed files or mods either. Just a straight up new seed and characters and we're only around day 45ish. )

Moat, stone walls, battlements, towers and a bottleneck with double gates the only way in.
Mobs always come from the north, so that's where my wolfes are.
The head of the last troll to try getting in is still down there in the moat, where all the spikes are.
And the castle is on a hill, so I have the high ground.

for myself ive noticed larger mobs, faster spawn rate and more stars. i dug a ditch around my base and if you go to a reasonable depth your fairly safe and raise ground to put an earth wall round about 3- 4 ground raises high do not let it slope you want it as vertical as you can but it will keep trolls away.

Same here. Killed some Greylings, cut down some trees, new spawn just a minute later. Not that they are a problem, more of an annoyance. Took my already leveled character into a new world, if i had started fresh it would have been slightly tougher this time.

Thanks for the replies here. Least I know I'm not a lone in thinkin this and I did the trench work on my last world and felt like I essentially cheated, cutting out a path for any/all enemies to be able to get to me. So I'd like to avoid that this time if at all possible. But if the Troll Invasions are just as bad or worse, then I may be forced to take that path and I hate the idea of that, I really do.

The invasions are the same. But the Greydwarfs do spawn in larger packs and more frequent.
Haven't noticed any other enemies spawning more frequently in the Swamp, Mountains or Plains though.

It's a minor annoyance at worst.

This may not be your cup of tea, totally player preference. But another way to play is the two worlds method.

Main world - one you put your main base and elaborate building projects: do not kill any bosses

Adventure world - kill bosses from 1st to last in whatever progression speed you like

It is bit of extra step to need to logout, change world, log back each time you need swap worlds but this method lets you basically have no major raids at all on your main base world, especially trolls+ which only trigger after 2nd boss killed.

So it's either dig trenches/moat as ppl suggested or just never kill any bosses in your main world and will only get the random spawns, no raids or the 'forest is moving' , 'ground shaking' etc events

There certainly seems to be an increase in enemy spawn rate. However some of what you are seeing may (may) be just luck of draw like Invasion frequency.

If you stick around your base a lot you will see more invasions. I had 2 in 3 days but not one in the 30 days prior due to gathering time. When I was a experimenting with a small Trelleborg style Ring Fort as a possible future major structure I was near work benches WAY more. I'm in a full building phase now so I'm away gathering mats way more.

I never even had a forest creature attack.

Here are two large mid tier bases that are... heavily defensible. (the second one has dealt with several troll attacks with minimal damage. (pre H&H))

before the update I defeated the 2nd boss on only day 14 and I immediately got a swamp invasion. since the update multiple days passed and nothing but a few brutes here and there and the usual greylings (I'm in a meadow close to black forest and only somewhat close to a swamp) I really can't say for sure but it might depend on the day you are on I'm past day 30 now and its pretty chill still.

Noticed difference as well - larger groups, more rapid spawns since last I played. Started fresh game like you to level new char and relearn everything.

Just a tip though, I can make it lot more manageable, like huge difference - by placing workbench down anywhere I am going to do a task (like mine copper, etc).

For picking up loose wood, rock, or quick 1 tin node, obviously don't do this. But any task, I setup workbench + quickie shelter bed. Takes like barely 30sec at this point.

The workbench protects from further spawns, not existing spawns, so I have to fight off the 1st or 2nd wave, then they basically stop other than random few roaming mobs from far away.

You may need to place 4 benches down, no need for cover as existent of the bench is fine for spawns, in a corner shape to make a big square of protection. I use a mod that extends my workbench by 4x so 1 bench in the center is same as 4 benches spread out to corners with default.

Anyway, it's made scavenging in black forest ton easier.

Yeah, same thing here. We've gotten a few raids. Thanks for the tip, Mozzy. I will do that for future resource gathering.
