Yup, 1 to 4 shots, depending on your level, with the bow will break the hive.

Don't forget to collect the Bee Queen, sometimes it keeps lying on top of the building after dropping.

It's a random spawn and can sometimes be harder to find them, but you are doing the right thing. Explore abandoned buildings in the meadows. Eventually you will find one. I ended up finding several on the second island I went to.

They can be pretty uncommon, but you'll just have to keep searching abandoned houses in the meadows. You'll hear the buzzing pretty clearly when you find them.

I have found hives in the abandoned shacks/buildings, (you will hear them buzzing when you get close), but apart from getting some green gunk all over me I haven`t managed yet to break these open. Is that possible?

They will spawn in abandoned structures in nearly any biome... I found one in a swamp today, nearly freaked me out when I thought a blob poisoned me and I didn't see it.

Think I found a bee in the plains biome. Didn't get a good look at it but my death was quick.

from what ive seen on youtube you need to knock down the hive by shooting it with a bow, im not 100% sure tho

Put crafting table > Take hammer > Destroy wall/ceiling that supports the hive > Hive will fall

that works as does Terik's suggestion.

They are attacked by mobs. Mobs take poision damage when they get near them.
