Tedious retreival
As I adventure out further and further, I'm finding it a bit tedious when i die(Which inevitably happens) its really tedious hiking all the way across the map again just to get killed again.
Any more efficient way to avoid that, OTHER than not getting killed in the first place? I ultimately get everything back, but I just shut the program down because I really can't drag myself across that map again.

Very true AugustusKron, I find myself doing that kind of thing in the mountain areas where there are several silver veins. Getting hunted by the wolves is still pretty challenging for those two minute attacks up there. Making paths in the swamp is super helpful as well.
yeah i do a lot of damage to mountainsides with the antler pick and hoe, just so it's easy to get around

So I got distracted, killed and now I have my undies and the point has two skeletons that pretty much kill me every time. Last strategy, draw them away, let them kill me elsewhere and hope they hang there so i can retrieve my stuff. Otherwise, it was nice.

Solid strategy, but also try to die carrying one small item. That way you can sprint in and grab that 'fake' gravestone first, picking up the Corpse Run buff for your run at the real one.

I always keep one open portal at my base named "OPEN". I leave the materials for a portal in my longship so when I want to explore or farm things I'll already have that with me. When I find a new place to explore/loot I establish a small beachhead, toss up a portal to the open one back home, and I park my boat a little ways into the water for safety.
If I need to repair my gear/tools, then I'm set. If I die then I have a close portal back to my corpse and the deathsquitos surrounding it. Hope this helps! Happy hunting!

Build forward operating bases (fob) with a bed along the way. you can always dismantle and move it as you progress.

Yeah, basically what everyone else said above. Whenever I'm getting ready to go on a boat trip, I make two portals. One portal at my main base(s) and another at the location that I land at. I usually look for an old beat up stone tower to put the portal in, usually on the second floor up and build a roof at the top so that it becomes a good place to put a bed down and get a fire going. Don't get me wrong, I made several trips across the map (and died) without putting a portal down before finally learning the lesson myself.

As soon as you find the red glowing cubes in the black forest crypts/tombs... whatever they are called. You'll need fine wood as well, so you'll have to craft a bronze ax to cut down the harder wood trees in the meadows area. Edit - Birch and Oak.

Been there man, my tip is build a bed in the doorway of a crypt or other structure that provides cover, that way all you have to do is build a fire and you've get a new set point. Once you've moved out further and the trek is too far, build another bed and set it as your spawn, this will stop long death runs and keep them shorter.
And just before you reach your grave for retrieval, if it's a curly situation where death is likely especially if your just naked running, build a bed close by so the walk is super short.

the more i play this game, the more time i seem to spend building up access to a new place after i get there.. now i'll spend several days building forts and paths in the swamp, to make getting the iron out easy and safe.. portals are obviously key, but i'm learning that putting up little fortifications here and there is a huge help.. just to have a place to retreat to out in the wilderness where they can't surround you as easy can make the difference in a lot of bad situations.. especially heading into the swamp for the first time.. just a few sections of stakewall here and there along a path is enough to mess with the swamp critters and make life much less stressful out there..
