Why would you add portals...

Seriously. It goes against the entire feel of the game. There's multiple ways to add tools that allow players to cover distance without adding literal portals like some terrible WoW expansion. At the least they need to be expensive to use.

o_O That's obviously a matter of opinion.

If you don't like portals, then don't use it.

If done sensibly with restrictions not to ruin the feel of the game i would also like to maybe in future be able to switch 'continents' (seeds) within the game..ideally setting a difficulty range (1-10) when creating new..this would make the world near limitless and maybe even solve the problem of having to start over when new biomes etc., come out and still be able to keep our precious base home :-)

Viking mythology speaks of many portals.

This is a Viking adventure/survival game focused on Viking mythology.

Therefore Valheim= Portals.

Don’t use them if you don’t like them and stop comparing this game to an mmorpg lol

It fits in lore and makes travel not garbage, it even has the debilitating stipulation of no metals. Besides they look cool.

It's because some people disagree that the point of the game is to be boring and repetitive, OP, and some of those people are developers of the game.

Also, everyone please spare me your head canons about the lore, I'm very sensitive

Idc about much about lore, I care about gameplay. Portals aren't good gameplay. If you have them you at least have to balance them. When you can zip around anywhere you essentially become non-local and it really diminishes the feel of the size of the world.

See the whole no refined metals thing to me doesn't make any sense.

I get no ore, for two reasons.
1) it keeps portals from being the absolute defacto transport system in the game. Carts and Boats remain purposeful.
3) From a lore angle one might argue impurities interfere with the magical energies. Which I can suspension of disbelief away.

Ingots on the other hand make zero sense
Since the player has
1) Already transported the ore to some level of base/outpost by way of foot/cart or boat.
2) put in the effort to smelt/purify them (read: did the thing)

Where it extra falls apart is that you can then travel with armor/weapons which are just the purified ingots reshaped into armor/weapons.

Not I've seem some people try to lore around that and say "well maybe you inscribe the weapons/armor with runes that allow their transport" and where that falls face first into the swampy quagmire is NAILS

So they're trying to tell me that I'm going to have the patience to painstakingly inscribe each and erry nail I make with a magic rune BUT am not going to have the basic forethought to just do the same to my ingots?

Portals are awesome for gameplay. You are just wrong.

Then don't use them, you're welcome.

From a game mechanic perspective it might make sense, as you can make a portal and smelter at the mining location.
Run through the portal and any enemy stops attacking that location, and transport ingots instantly from the mining location to where you want.
It negates the overencumbered mechanic, and only requires a little planning beforehand to do.
But lore wise, ye it makes no sense to not transport ingots through portals.

This is not true. All materials required to make a smelter are portalable, and you only need a workbench to place it. It would be very easy to just smelt the ore and portal out and thus teleporting ore becomes trivially easy. It takes nearly no effort to build a smelter anywhere you got a portal if you have the materials and you can simply portal over the coal and smelt everything without needing to take it back to a base.

Well for some people like myself who happen to be a single parent and don't have a ton of time. Portals are a very welcome addition.
