do you currently collect inactive crafting materials?

do you collect inactive materials like flametal ore and stone golem crystal?

if we collect things like this now, can we use these materials later for crafting once the game is expanded? or will only materials collected after the recipes become active be usable?

Just bare in mind that building in a biome on your map that is not currently populated like Mistlands could backfire when that biome gets updated in future because the update may not be able to apply on that map. So you may end up having to start a new game in that instance, which may be frustrating if you put a ton of work into building etc.

So, if you want to keep a chance of a map being playable through the future updates, it's a good idea to avoid uncovering & building in Mistlands etc.

**No one is 100% sure whether this will totally protect you from having to start a new map when a future content update is released, I do know the devs approach is to try and avoid that kind of forced restarting if possible, but better safe than sorry if you can avoid it now!

Also I literally built a castle for my inert pick up storage. I am a hoarder, I need help.

i haven't been playing lately but most people seem to speculate that we will need to roll a new map/seed in order to enjoy the full spectrum of new patch content. Also, setting up a shack with a portal and bed takes like 5 seconds and virtually no materials. This will be much easier for most players when just entering the plains than trying to settle in the plains itself.

That's a totally valid approach, of course. I just wanted to make that comment so people can make a decision knowing the "risks" (I use quotes because right now we don't really know 100%.). Some people hate restarting a map more than they would hate waiting to play till a new map to enjoy content is not a risk. But thank you for adding more perspective :)

Rn the Mistlands doesn't give you anything, there are ancient roots which can't be chopped down yet, presumably will be another wood type for better stuff. Mistlands is honestly fun to creep around in, very spooky atmosphere and a great place to setup an outpost, the darkness makes it much harder for the player to be spotted by any patrols wondering in from other Biomes.

mistlands is very good if you are just getting into plains and looking for a safe place to set up a border base. zero enemies in mistlands currently, despite the fact that it will probably someday be tougher than plains.

Considering that a chest costs 10 wood, I pretty much have an attic with chests of stuff I don't really use right now. Out of sight, not getting in the way, but there just in case...

Just a guess, mind you, but if one collects stone golem crystals now and a future update includes stone golem crystals in a recipe one should be able to use the crystals one has collected.

The game keeps track of what items you have in your character inventory in a binary fashion. You either have it or you don't. I doubt it keeps track of when the item appeared in your character inventory.
